Ron Gardenhire announced that he is not going to utilize "bullpen by committee." So far, so good for Bucfan, who drafted Matt Guerrier for his bullpen.

But Gardenhire then wets the bed by declaring that John Rauch is the closer he selected, over a guy who had a 0.97 WHIP and 2.36 ERA last year.

Why are managers criminally stupid when it comes to "closers"?? Guy throws 96 mph - great, he is the closer. Failed in that roler previously? Cannot throw strikes consistently? Falls into hitter's counts? WHO CARES, THE CLOSER JOB IS YOURS.

Throw 89 mph, with superb change and a good cutter? Proven track record? Year after year of success? WHO CARES - YOU NEED TO THROW 96 MPH, EVEN IF THAT MEANS THE PITCH JUST HITS THE DIRT THAT MUCH FASTER.

I hope Ron Gardenhire can sleep at night, screwing my fantasy team like this.

Yeah, read that and went straight to the waiver wire, thinking Rauch might have gone undrafted. Nope, buccoboy already has him. There's a reason this guy is our reigning champ, fellas.

I tried to tell you that during the draft. The Sports Guy put that out on his podcast on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I took Jake Fox with my last pick because Yahoo had him listed as the starting RFer for the A's...After reading some stuff from the local newspapers out there, he's going to be the backup catcher...

No, you said that the Twins were going "bullpen by committee." I heard Gardenhire interviewed earlier in the day, and he said that he was going to try and pick a guy. I figured he would select the best pitcher in that group .... naaaah.

The guy can rake, but his defense is beyond awful. Saw him catching last night in a preseason game against the Giants. He is one of the few major league catchers I have ever seen who dropped pitches that were called strikes ... he did it twice.

In one inning.

The next inning, a ball glanced off his mitt and went to the backstop. Ruled a wild pitch, but that was a terrible ruling. It was 6" off the ground when it skimmed off his mitt.

That said, the A's are looking to move Cust. When they do, Fox takes over as DH. The guy can rake.

I can't imagine why they're eager to move Kust

Cust was DFA'd today.

I wonder if NH thinks he could teach him to play 1st?

Cust isn't happy about it.

Cust, in the AL, is a pretty good DH. He is a poor man's Adam Dunn. The last three years he has averaged 28 HR's and an OBP of near .375. Much like Dunn, you know that you have one of three possible outcomes each AB....a walk, a HR or a K. Not much else in between!

His issue has become that his OBP has declined three straight years ... .408, .375, .356. His slugging has also gone down three straight years ... .504, .476, .417. His OPS last season was .773, which is not really that good for a guy whose only value is as a hitter.

Good points Bucfan, but WHO is going to be the power threat in that lineup? Kurt Suzuki? Kevin Kouzmanoff? Sheesh! The A's lineup makes the Buccos look like Murderer's Row... Hell, if Ben Sheets stays healthy all year, he may end up with an ERA of 2.50 and 15 losses still.

Hopefully Jake Fox...

But Oakland said they are going with Eric 'Made of Glass' Chavez at DH...Chavez makes Doumit look like Lou Gehrig
