If only our Pirates had a chance to draft players like B.J. Upton!!

Or Matt Wieters, for that matter!

Market size does not mean sh!t for talent assessment and player evaluation. Imagine the Pirates with Upton, McLouth, Doumit, and Laroche on the major leage roster, and Alvarez, McCutchen and Wieters on the way. Plus Maholm, Ohlendorf, McCutch-pitch, Karstens, Snell on the hill.

They would be one of the better teams in baseball. Seriously.

That is why payroll, market size, etc. mean NOTHING to me. That is why I think the Pirates might be on the way in the next 2-3 years with Huntington. And that is why I am not one of those guys in BH's camp.

When I think of Bonifay passing on a guy like Upton, and Littlefield on a player like Wieters, I am despondent. When I think that the current management took Alvarez, damn the Boras factor, I am heartened.

For the sake of historical accuracy, Bonifay didn't pass on drafting Upton. Upton was in the 2002 draft and DL was our GM at the time. At the time of the 2002 draft, Camoron worked in the front office of the (Devil) Rays.

POP - you are correct. Grrrr. Pirate scouting director Ed Creech offered this about Bullington when he was selected ahead of Upton:

"What was a bit of a shock was that the Pirates immediately projected Bullington as a third starter in the major leagues. The No. 1 pick overall -- "1-1" in draftspeak -- just a third starter?

"Basically calling a spade a spade," Creech said. "We didn't want to send out false hopes, false innuendos. We thought he was the best available out there. We didn't want anybody thinking there was a [Mark] Prior out there."

Yeesh. DL was bad, but I guess I underestimated just how bad he was at player evaluation.

Bryan "No. 3 Starter" Bullington over a gifted player who could hit, hit for power, run, and had a power arm? And who was not an athlete trying to learn to play baseball, but instead was a very talented baseball player who happened to be extremely athletic? Yikes.

What a terrible decision.

I couldn't agree more. Plus the fact that Camoron worked in scouting for the Rays and likely had input into the pick just rubs salt into the wound.

If it's any consolation, I'm sure if we had drafted Upton, we would have found some way to screw him up along the way.

It's such a great story to see him bounce back from two major arm surgeries.

"Upton comes into this game in relief of John Van benschoten, who went just 1 2/3 innings, giving up 5 walks and 7 runs. So far, Upton has struggled with control of his 90-mph fastball, but hey, he did hit a home run when he went 4 2/3 innings in relief of Van Benschoten last week. The Pirates laugh off any thought of moving Upton back into a role as a position player."

"The first pitch to Ankiel ... Hit high, hit deep, there it goes!!"
