O's definitely overpaid for two months of a guy whose rep has always been based on gaudy save totals.

This year he's sporting a bright shiny ERA, but does anyone really expect that 99.1% strand rate to hold up against the rest of the AL East in OPACY?

Ichiro is about to collect his 4,000th hit. Of course, you have to include his time in Japan which I am inclined to do since his production here in the states has been pretty comparable. He was a more effective power hitter in Japan, hitting 200+ HRs in about 6 seasons. But the hits, well, he's still the same guy. And 4000 hits is pretty remarkable.

It's arguable that if he spent his whole career in the US that he'd challenge Pete Rose's record.

I'd argue that. He's going to get to 4000 in 200 less games than Rose did. That's a full season ahead of him.

With Houston (37-80) inevitably on pace for a third straight 100-loss season, it got me thinking how historically bad that stretch is. To put that into perspective, the Pirates have only had two 100-loss seasons during the "streak."

If my quick research is correct, outside of a 3-year stretch by the Royals in the mid-2000s, you'd have to go all the way back to mid-60s and late-70s expansion years for the Mets and Blue Jays who each had three and four consecutive 100-loss seasons, respectively. In the modern era, Tampa was also a victim of the expansion woes by having two in the beginning, and the Tigers in 02-03, with the infamous 43-119 season in 2003 which is the worst modern era record by a wide margin. And one that surprised was me was Washington with two in 08-09.

So as of now they are in Royals territory for the modern era record. If they get to four consecutive next year they are in the historical dregs with the 1962 expansion Mets.

BB/9 are up, flyball rate is up, groundball rate is down. And he was never as good as his gaudy save totals would indicate.

And he's done it. Ichiro has gotten 12 hits in the last 9 games, and he's got 4000. Pretty damn remarkable.

Interesting piece on Derek Jeter's defense.

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/960 ... er-defense

Quote:
So this is the tragedy of Derek Jeter's defense: Just when he finally found out how to play shortstop, he began to get old. Jeter no longer makes as many fundamental mistakes as he did in his early thirties, the last time someone studied his best and worst plays. But at an age at which only a handful of players have managed to spend a full season at shortstop, he lacks the speed to take advantage of his improved positioning. All of which makes Jeter's defensive evolution one of baseball's best might-have-beens. If Cashman had taken Jeter to that dinner about defense a decade earlier, how valuable could he have been? And how many World Series would the Yankees have won?

The Cardinals just picked up John Axford for a PTMNL.

It's the 25th anniversary of Orel Hershiser's 59 scoreless inning streak.

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/stor ... ngs-streak

Hershiser, including playoffs ended up with a second half that saw him yield 7 earned runs over 102 innings. 7!

Quote:
According to ESPN sabermetrician Dan Szymborski, in 2013, teams score in about 26.4 percent of innings, which means that a league-average pitcher has approximately a 1-in-71 million chance of throwing 59 consecutive scoreless innings.

Was just thinking how nice it would be to see the A's, Pirates, Rays, and Royals in the post season while the Nats, Phillies, Giants, Angels, Yankees, and Rangers are on the outside looking in.
