True, although with a weak farm system, an aging roster, and a team based around pitchers you'd think they'd want payroll flexibility.

Agreed.

I'm more shocked that they paid a guy who produces at a Pence level 18M than the actual contract itself. At his current production level and age, that'll wind up being a terrible contract for a team headed to a rebuild.

It's still an overpay, but it's probably because there are few viable FAs and/or internal options that they decided to retain Pence so expensively.

With Houston (37-80) inevitably on pace for a third straight 100-loss season, it got me thinking how historically bad that stretch is. To put that into perspective, the Pirates have only had two 100-loss seasons during the "streak."

If my quick research is correct, outside of a 3-year stretch by the Royals in the mid-2000s, you'd have to go all the way back to mid-60s and late-70s expansion years for the Mets and Blue Jays who each had three and four consecutive 100-loss seasons, respectively. In the modern era, Tampa was also a victim of the expansion woes by having two in the beginning, and the Tigers in 02-03, with the infamous 43-119 season in 2003 which is the worst modern era record by a wide margin. And one that surprised was me was Washington with two in 08-09.

Okay here's my last post of the season regarding my fascination with Houston's fiasco season. If swept by the Yankees starting tonight to conclude the season, the Astos will have dropped 15 straight to end the year (111 total losses). Can you officially mark that down as being amongst the lowliest optimistic a fanbase has likely ever felt at any point in time during their franchise's history? Three consecutive 106+ loss seasons, ending the third by not winning a game for half a month. As Pirates fans, you look to the 2010 season as the lowliest of the 20-year streak (perhaps not fundamentally as the second half featured Alvarez, Tabata and Walker promoted, but W/L statistically), and they played around .500 through September with the young core at least. I completely agree with what Jeff Luhnow has been doing with the Astros the past few years, but man has this rebuilding probably been taxing on that fanbase.

The other day I read somewhere that a local Astros telecast earned a Neilsen rating of 0.0.

Seriously, I'm not making that up. They pulled a Blutarsky.

As a Pittsburgher now living in Houston, I have enjoyed pointing out that, while we haven't won in 20 years, we were NEVER this bad (105 plus losses) for any three year stretch. :D

The Bucs may have had the longest streak, but there were nowhere near the worst team ever over a 20 year period, or for any fraction of that.

Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez just threw a no-hitter! It was official with him standing on the on deck circle, I've never seen anything quite like it!

I remember last year there was a report down here that a September Astros telecast was literally being seen in 30,000 households, in a media market of 5 million or so, yeah, that is pretty much ZERO!

Indians win 5-1.

Rangers retake the lead in the 6th. 3-2. Pretty solid game. Texas pulled Darvish after just 85 pitches.

Rangers pulling away now. 6-2 in the 8th.

So, this means the Rays and Rangers play a one-gamer, then the winner of that goes to Cleveland for the "real" Wild Card?

Exactly.

I think we all wanted to see Cleveland lose, setting up the three-way tie round-robin format.

Dale Sveum axed by the Cubs (and joins his former boss Ned Yost on the Royals staff a couple days later).

Looks like Epstein had him on a pretty short leash considering the lack of talent he had to work with. Not too surprising though considering their two biggest young building blocks were either terrible (Castro) or mildly disappointing (Rizzo) this year. According to Epstein he was under a total evaluation in the second half of the season which was addressed to Sveum at the All-Star break but at the time there was no intention of getting rid of him.

So, I guess the early money (pun intended) is on Cano going to the Dodgers since Cano "only" wants $305 million for 10 seasons.

And this is why I don't prognosticate too much...

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/stor ... ano-report

Magic says the Dodgers will not be pursuing Cano, instead saving money to re-sign Kershaw.

Quote:
Johnson said the Dodgers' priority is re-signing left-handed ace Clayton Kershaw, according to the report. Kershaw struck out 12 over seven innings as the Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 6-1 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Thursday night, and had a 1.83 ERA during the regular season. If Kershaw continues with this type of performance in the postseason, his asking price is likely to increase.

"We're not worried about that. We already know we've got to give him a lot of money. What's a few more zeroes. I mean, really?" Johnson told the newspaper, laughing.

Neat compilation of baseball terms by Jonah Keri at Grantland.

A pair of one-hitters.... What fun. The Cards go up 2-0 over the Dodgers and the Sox lose. Even more fun... And even the scorelines help ameliorate the fact that there was no soccer this weekend. Now, if only Tony Romo can have another day like he had last week and the Boys drop the Skins, it will have been a pretty good week. From a non-Pirates point of view, of course.

Those games by the Cards are why I voted to play the Dodgers should we have won. I liked our pitching in Chavez Ravine and at home.

Ah well, what could have been.

Great piece on Gibson's HR. If you watch the video, Eckersley comes off as particularly poised. Not too many competitors would talk about one of their most notable failures so candidly.
