Does he have a shot at being part of the opening day roster next year? I was looking at his stats this afternoon (because it is totally normal to spend an October afternoon looking at stats of a minor league reliever of a team out of the playoffs. I swear, I don't have a problem, I can stop any time I want) and was quite impressed. Only 14 walks in Indy, 4 of which were intentional. That would suggest that his control problems were fixed, although there is the possibility that lesser hitters were swinging at balls because his stuff is too good for them. WHIP, ERA, K's all very solid.

I have to admit I thought it was a horrible pick in the Rule 5, but he has been impressive since getting sent down.

I'd say yes he has a shot at making the opening day roster next year, but he'll be one of many guys competing for just a few bullpen slots.

Also, throwing strikes in the minors is not the same as throwing strikes in the majors. See John VanBenschoten among others.

Considering our pitching this year I would say Meek has a very good chance. I can't recall...what is his roster status?

He's not on the 40-man, but he's in the system.

So here's the question...if he had to be on the 40 man last year, wouldn't he have to be placed on our 40 man before the Rule 5 draft? I get that he didn't have to be on our 40 man through last season because he had cleared waivers, but what about now?

Probably just waiting for a spot to open via free agency departures and/or trades...

Maybe there is a rule against a guy being a rule 5 guy twice.

I'm not sure that's the case, but it's kind of what I was thinking when I asked the question. I'm thinking he can stay in the minor leagues for the rest of his life now, although I think we are still limited in how many times we can call him up and send him back before he becomes a FA.

To follow up the 40-man roster issue...

I was looking through WTM's site, and Meek DOES have to be added to the 40 man roster. Additionally, we must add Tabata, Neil Walker, and Jamie Romak. There may be others, but I think these are probably the only ones we would risk losing in the Rule 5.

Ohh lets be like Littlefield and leave Tabata off... C'mon, it will be fun

I did not include guys like Delaney, who I imagine we will not protect, but is eligible for the rule 5 draft.

But there is no way Littlefield would NOT protect Tabata...mainly because he never would have gotten him in the first place.

Not Tabata at 19, Littlefield would have gone after him at 39 though....
