He got paid to do it, though. It's a lot different when it's your job.

Indeed he was - he enabled one to actually enjoy listening to the game.

Give Lanny credit for lasting as long as he did. However, he is not in the same class of Pgh legends like Bob Prince, Myron Cope and Mike Lange. He was bland & boring. From all accounts, he was a nice guy.
Lanny an enabler? He was paid by the team, he was not paying them. If Lanny is an enabler, so is the janitor on the Pirate payroll.

That's a subjective topic, Bull. I don't consider Lanny bland and boring. I personally think he was way better at his job than Myron Cope (especially late in his career), but not as good at his job as Mike Lange. It's subjective.

I agree with the enabler thing. Lanny was paid, which is why I don't "feel bad for him" or anything like that. He was doing a job that millions would love to do - call major league baseball games. Yes, the losing sucked, but I don't believe anyone was forcing Lanny to keep his job.

Well, it's so rare that I attempt humor, it probably caught a lot of people by surprise. ;)

Lanny was terrible calling play-by-play in the early years but got better as he got older in my opinion. I feel sad that I rarely got to hear him since Pirates broadcasts moved to FM.
