In my opinion, if you really want a knock on Russell as manager look no further than Paul Maholm. He has thrown in 30 games. Pitched in 200+ Innings and his last start against the Dodgers he throws 105 pitches in 7+ INNINGS.

Put Mahlom on a Little league pitch count (85) and let some young guys get some work. The very last thing this franchise needs is for Maholm to grab his elbow. Maholm is way beyond his 2007 innings pitched. Every day you needlessly run him out there is a day where you are pushing the breaking point.

S-K: I agree, Maholm should be shutdown. There's no value for him to pitch the remainder of the season for a team playing for nothing.

I third that sentiment. For an example of what can happen when a coach forces a talented young pitcher to strain himself for the remainder of a season with nothing on the line, look no further than Tom Gorzelanny.

You let him finish the season. If he was experiencing any physical problem then there would be concern. Otherwise, he learns how to pitch late in the season under less than desirable circumstances. It's the major leagues. afterall. Personally, I don't believe Tracy's use of Gorzelanny had anything to do with his problems this year.

Here, here, and reading what's been said by both NH, and Gorzy late this year, his lack of preparation this past year is what lead to most of his problems.
