I seem to recall there being some posts very critical of MLB on this issue when MLB wa was involved in litigation over the use of statistics. I also seem to recall at least some suggestion that other sports were above such frivolities and that this is yet another reason to hate Bud Selig. This link suggests that it is far from exclusive to MLB . . .

Prior to the MLB case in the 8th Circuit, and it's corresponding District Court case, all sports organizations enjoyed receiving royalties in exchange for allowing fantasy sports sites to use their corresponding statistics. It was not until the MLB case that people started to realize, "Hey, why should I spend a dime on facts?" MLB did their best to color the statistics as "publicity rights," but in the end the 8th Circuit rightfully concluded that sports statistics are facts, and facts are in the public domain. Now, the party is over for all sports organizations.

Good for CBS. The NFL has little business forcing unnecessary IP licenses upon fantasy football leagues. If small groups of friends don't have to pay a fee to play fantasy football, neither should organizations like Yahoo and CBS.
