reading DK's chat were he referenced NH's plan to rebuild the Pirates by stocking up on pitching and then trading for the necessary bats? Ugh!!!! It sounds logical but havent we been stockpiling pitching for 10 years and have Zach Duke, Ian Snell and Tom Gorzo to show for it?

Did I mention we keep most of the scouting intact that has been stockpiling that wealth of pitching we have today?

Lets not jump from the bridge yet...Lets hope see if he goes for possible #1 and #2 starters not #4 and #5, with a possibility of being a fringe #3 guy...

Well, I imagine it wouldn't be so bad if we hadn't released/traded away Chris Young, Bronson Arroyo, and Leo Nunez.

Where does one find a transcript for this chat?

Agreed, some patience is warranted. There's a difference between having a draft strategy and executing it well.

That is difficult to do. Very few pitchers can become truly dominant, number 1 starters.

These guys are so rare that they get players like Hanley Ramirez in return.

Theoretically, it sounds good, but the reason that truly dominant starters are so valued is that they are freaking difficult to find and keep healthy.

Do the Pirates have some magic ability to foretell the future for these guys? I don't think so.

Meanwhile, as has been pointed out in detail on another Pirates message board, the best first round draft selections over the past 10 years have been hitters. The division in drafting between pitching and hitting is nearly 50/50, but the star players favor hitters 10-1.

There is a lesson here . . . oh, and P.S. The two hiiters the Pirates took in the first round 2005 and 2006 are in AAA, and one (McCutchen) is rated by BA as the no. 8 best prospect in baseball. Meanwhile, the pitcher selected in 2007 is in rehab.

That's a good theory, it just doesn't always work (our stockpile includes or included Bobby Bradley, Bryan Bullington, JVB, etc.)
