Apparently, management met tonight after yet another abysmal outing by Morris, and came up with 2 options, move Dumatrait into a starting or role or release Morris.

I'm good with option #2, BUT, IT'S NOT MY $10M.

According to the Post-Gazzette retirement is in play. That would be a $10 million gift from the baseball gods! If I'm Matt Morris I don't leave that much money on the table. No way.

That money is spent already whether they keep him or not. It won't cost the Pirates $10M to release Morris. It will cost them the difference between Van Benschoten's major and minor league salaries, if any.

I should also mention that it is TheShark's birthday today. Nice timing with the board!

It's official. Morris was cut (he did not retire) and the plan is for Dumatrait to go into the rotation and have JVB provide long relief, though the PG mentions that Burnett may be up soon to replace JVB. I assume they did this because JVB hasn't pitched in a few days and Burnett pitched last night, so he wouldn't be available to throw multiple innings the next day or two. Either way, they need to have the long relief figured out in time for Gorzo's start Tuesday.

Glad to see the back of Morris, but the thought of Vanman's Scrotum doesn't exactly enthuse me.

This was a mistake by the previous regime. You had to pay the guy no matter what so why pay him to suck. I applaud the Pirates for eating the contract although they should send a bill to DL. :?

Hard to to think of many worse

Oh come on! You can't tell me you're not happy that Morris is off the team. Sure, his contract is still an albatross that the Bucs have to deal with, but at least they recognized that he was a sunk cost and did not feel forced to keep playing a below-replacement-level pitcher at the expense of the team.

Great move by the Pirates here. It allows them to explore more of what they have in their farm system while getting rid of a non-asset.

Not even close to the worst, as they gave up nothing to get him.

When Greg Brown opens his mouth, now THERE'S something the club should be embarrassed about. He flat sucks.

While they both sucked, comparing Morris to Bell is an insult to Morris. He was entirely professional during his brief tenure here.

If there is competition, somebody better let me know. If there is competition, they better eliminate me out of the race and go ahead and do what they're going to do with me. I ain't never hit in spring training and I never will.

Ask Littlefield and ask Mac if I'm in competition. If it ain't settled with me out there, then they can trade me. I ain't going out there to hurt myself in spring training battling for a job. If it is [a competition], then I'm going into 'Operation Shutdown.' Tell them exactly what I said. I haven't competed for a job since 1991, if I don't start then I guess I'll be out of here.

Not even close.
