Everybody knows about the fix in 1919 but I have heard that The Pirates were suspects of throwing the first World Series as well.Anybody know anything about it or where it can be read?

I've never heard that but I'd love to learn more. Not saying this instance it is true, but my grandfather used to tell me stories about fixes in sports. That kind of crap happened way more than a lot of us believe (or would like to believe) back then.

Yea I can't remember if it was a DK story or not.It was I think about the first series or the World Series as a whole but without question mentioned The Pirates believed to be on the take. The way the Owners had all the power and players having no say so in much of anything led to this kind of thing.

Gambling in general leads to this kind of thing. I believe there still to be fixes or attempted fixes in sports today. Not saying it's every game or anything, but with the amount of money in sports gambling, it would be foolish to think that this stuff doesn't happen at all.

Of course there is no real evidence, just speculation.

I think I remember reading in DK's article on this, that the 1919 Sox were simply the first team caught fixing the games. It is almost universially accepted that the 1918 series was just as fixed. Like the link indicates, players purses came from passing the hat, so to speak, and extending a series was in everyone's interest, monetarily speaking.

I just bought online last night a book called Bury The Black Sox about the coverup after The Series that almost worked.I can remember when I heard this sort of thing growing up I couldn't believe players would do such a thing and thought they were the bad guys. They were the real victims with Owners acting as if players were their property and one reason why things have come full circle.

I recommend that all read the link posted by Argentum. The information in that article is great, including:

• Cy Young never took warmup pitches.
• During one series game, Cy Young was in an office watching gate receipts being counted when he was called on to pitch in relief.
• Cy Young umpired two innings of a regular season game, when the umpire was late.

Great information.

"Cy and Tessie Bring Home the Title." Is this different from what Argentum posted?

I believe that was just sour grapes. The Pirates were expected to win because they were from the long established NL.
