Wonder how all the naysayers will spin this one (courtesy of DK of the PPG):

Quote:
Alvarez's bonus, part of a minor league contract, far exceeded the $4 million the Pirates paid to pitcher Bryan Bullington, No. 1 overall in 2001. More striking, it was part of total spending on this 32-player draft class that approached $10 million, a figure made possible when owner Bob Nutting early last month authorized a significant increase. That total included $8,166,000 on players in the top 10 rounds and an additional $900,000 yesterday to lure the 20th-round pick, pitcher Quinton Miller.

That not only was a record for the Pirates, but also was roughly $2 million more than any major league team spent on the draft last season. The high last season was the New York Yankees' $7,655,000.

Yes, and in spending all that money, they didn't sign the number two pick. Not only does it look like they're serious about winning by spending, but they didn't go extra money for a guy who is damaged goods. And they get compensation pick next summer.

Bottom line is great job NH and FC and BN.

WOW, when you put it all together with the trades and signings of the guys away from College and drafted guys, and the building of the complex in Latin America, it should be clear to everyone that we are moving quickly in the right direction. Next spring training should be very interesting from the pitcher perspective and the young position players.

I like this quote from patthatt over at bucsdugout.com as an example of how this organization's philosophy has changed:
Quote:
In 2007, we drafted Jim Tracy`s son Brian, a mediocre non-prospect college pitcher, in the 20th round, and got the expected nondescript performance from him at State College for one abbreviated season before he moved into coaching.

In 2008, we have reportedly signed our 20th round pick, Quinton Miller, a highly-regarded HS pitcher with major upside.

This perfectly illustrates the difference between the previous administration`s focus on the draft and overdrafting guys to get them signed easily for slot money, and how the new administration led by Coonelly and Huntington look at it so differently.

This has been done in the past. See Nate McLouth.
That said, I am not defending the past knuckleheads.
