DK is reporting on the PBC blog that another high pick is signing today. It supposedly is NOT Alvarez, though. He speculates it is Robbie Grossman. I, for one, would be ecstatic to see him sign.

Who's Robbie Grossman, and why haven't I heard of him? (I start searching the Internet)

Edit: got it. Looks like the only other Top 10 guys left to sign are Alvarez, Scheppers, and Gagnon

Its Grossman and No. 12 speculates that he signed for significantly above-slot. What the heck will BH do with this?

He'll pray that Alvarez doesn't sign so he can continue to say he "told you so".

This was the guy I wasn't sure that we would sign. He was 50-50 on going to the Texas Longhorns. From what I've read (which is limited) he's a definate prospect so I'm glad they locked him up.

I've always been faily confident that we would sign the college guys (Alvarez, Scheppers, etc) because they have alot more to lose by not signing. What are they going to do roll the dice and go back for their Senior year (if they can even do that)? The other option is to not sign and play a year in an independent league somewhere, which I don't think is worth it. It's only a matter of time before we sign Alvarez and Scheppers.

The reason this signing is so good is the Pirates actually saved money in the long run. If he went to college and ende up being a stud, he comes out his junior year and gets a $6 million signing bonus. If he busts, you will never spend on money on him again. It's totally worth the risk.
