I am just wondering Who Do YOU think is the Most OVER-rated player in the Majors?

Overrated does not mean directly Over-payed for me (but often it does) or disliked..

Mark Buehrle (Cws)
Brett Myers (Phi)
Aramis Ramirez (ChC)
Kaz Matsui (Hou) -
Andrew Jones (LaD) - Man he was my Favorite, but since......
Barry Zito (SF)

(this is not in order)

Jeter absolutely has to be on this list, at least defensively. Of course he has to make those ridiculous jump-throws, he has no range...

I think Zito is appropriately rated at this point, I don't think anyone thinks of him as good anymore. Definitely overpaid, but like the OP said, not the same thing as overrated.

I totally agree with Andruw Jones.

Larry Walker.

Any guy pulls himself out of the lineup in tie games, or goes on the DL for a TOOTHACHE has no business drawing an MLB paycheck.

a Top 5 eh? I do Top 5's for a living.*

Top 5 Overrated Baseball Players
1. Derek Jeter
2. Jason Varitek (I will never forgive him for making this year's All-Star Team.)
3. Kosuke Fukudome
4. Ken Griffey Jr. (I'm assuming we're only talking about recent performance, not lasting legacy.)
5. Eric Gagne (the fact that he's still playing makes him overrated.)

* - My friends and I keep a blog of our Top 5 lists over at: http://topfiveofalltime.blogspot.com/. But it doesn't pay anything, so I'm guessing I shouldn't say I do them "for a living."

Jeter and Tek top my list. After that: Torii Hunter, Alfonso Soriano and Aaron Rowand.

Jeter is #1 with a bullet. Others mentioned in this thread all make cases to be on the list though. I would include Varitek on my list, and quite frankly, Manny is heading into that territory as his production seems to be slipping while his reputation continues to grow.

Now, if you mean most overrated by members of this board...Jack Wilson  .

(ok, I don't really think that, just trying to antagonize people)

BBF is hereby awarded the Giant Oar Award (GOA) for being the best at stiring the sh$t. After all thoses pages of discussion(?) about Wilson which has not even ended yet, this is one of the best jobs I remember of pulling someone's something or other.

I have no list to present except the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. If you think they are not overrated watch M&M any morning on ESPN and you'll begin to understand.

Nonsense. The best power hitters in the game produce from the 3, 4 and 5 slots. Soriano's best numbers — far and away — have come from the leadoff slot, where that career .328 OBP ain't helping out any.

Whenever he's been dropped in the order to the traditional power slots, he becomes at best league average. See for yourself.

Interesting to note that he gets 0.184 RBI per AB at the 5 spot, which is higher than at any other position (though I'm not stupid - I know that it's easier to drive in runs when you already have someone on base.) In the end, you're correct about Soriano's ideal position. What I'm wondering is why his SLG is highest when batting first. That shouldn't depend on the presence of baserunners, right?

I would think that slugging percentage increases as you have runners on base, due to the fact that pitchers usually cannot afford more baserunners in these situations and must offer better pitches to hit. Which makes Soriano's slugging numbers even harder to understand.

Barry Bonds...the guy was the greatest offensive player I've ever seen, but his glove and his arm were a joke.

I don't care how many gold gloves he won, those were for his bat. He would routinely misjudge routes to balls, misjudge pop fly depth, allow baserunners to get another bag, etc.

Even when he was with the Buccos he had no idea where to play in the outfield (especially when it was situational, i.e. up by one in the ninth) and his arm was lousy.

Off of the top of my head, I'd say that Jason Varitek is overrated.

It's almost unbelievable that you can call a deserving first ballot HOFer overrated, but Jeter is overrated.

Most closers are overrated.

I'll bet you think that Jack Lambert is a sissy for retiring over a sore big toe as well.
