Quote:
Bud Selig has ordered an investigation into Manny Ramirez's split with the Boston Red Sox, according to a report in the Boston Globe.
The paper reports a source directly linked to the investigation says Bud Selig has directed Major League Baseball executive vice president Rob Manfred to contact everyone involved in the trade to the Dodgers for individual accounts of how the transaction unfolded.

Is Bud afraid of Roger Goddell upstaging him?

What is Bud attempting to accomplish?

Reports this morning on ESPN suggested that Selig is looking into allegations of the influence that Ramirez' agent, Scott Boras, may have had with the transaction. From what I could ascertain, the allegations surround the fact that Boras did not negotiate Ramirez' deal with the Red Sox and, if the Red Sox exercised the $20M club option, Boras would not get any cut. The allegations are that the Red Sox were "assured" by someone that Ramirez would give 100% if the Red Sox agreed not to pick up that option. In the absence of that agreement . . . read in between the lines. As you know, part of the deal to the Dodgers involved an agreement that the Dodgers would not excercise the $20M club option. Further, apparently it has been made known (through I don't know what channels) that Boras is seeking 4 years/$100M for Ramirez when he becomes a free agent or obtains an extension.

If this is all true, then Selig has every right to investigate as this goes to the integrity of the game. Frankly, I doubt that he will find that anyone cooperates with him. Too much at stake to be a whistle blower . . . . IF ( and I repeat IF) any of this has any semblance of truth.

I would imagine it has something to do with this:

When the trade to L.A. was reached, the Globe reported that Scott Boras called the Red Sox and said Ramirez would stay and play hard for the rest of the season if the team would agree to drop two $20 million option years at the end of his deal.

The prepatory stage leading up to this for Boras and to a smaller extent Manny (and by extension the players association)...........
