The Pirates traded All-Star left fielder Jason Bay to the Boston Red Sox as part of a three-team deal in their only move before Major League Baseball's 4 p.m. deadline.

Boston sent outfielder Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of the deal. The Pirates will receive Brandon Moss, Craig Hansen, Andy LaRoche and Avery Morris.

I like this move.

Quote:
Christina Kahrl (1:43:40 PM PT): Kudos to Huntington, because LaRoche and goodies for Bay is exactly the sort of improve-now move this organization and its fans could use.

Will Carroll (1:43:52 PM PT): Hmm. Andy LaRoche ... can he move or does this make Pedro Alvarez a 1B? KG?

Kevin Goldstein (1:44:43 PM PT): I'll bet a burrito that Andy LaRoche turns into a well above-average every day third baseman and occasional all-star now that he's away from the team that's jerked him around for the last two years.

Hopefully LaRoche hits in April and May.

How does this affect the Alvarez negotiations?

This trade is great. I just talked to a Dodger fan who was very happy to get Manny, but not happy about losing LaRoche. He said they were thinking of making him a 2B because of Blake DeWitt. He is the consensus No. 2 prospect in the Dodgers system.

Morris was drafted by the Rays, played in the Pioneer League, then was redrafted by the Dodgers in the first round.

Really sad to see Bay go, but seems like we got good value.

I don't see why the Sox did this trade though. They are essentially paying the same for Bay as they were for Manny, and Bay is not as good. Manny would have forgotten about this whole episode next week anyway.

I'm a little afraid that Bay is going to get eaten up by AL pitching...

I can hear boos already from a listless swing at a slider low and away, late in a game...

Good deal for the Bucs. Very good deal for the Red Sox. Unless Ramirez shows up in LA with a time machine and a new attitude, the Dodgers got hosed.

Manny is talented, so I'm not sure. I hate that he gets special treatment, but if he gets the treatment he likes and is happy, then I think he may perform.

Either way, Dodgers still did 3rd best in this deal.

I hate to say bay leave, but it's nice to see the pirates are moving in the right direction.

Hansen and Moss have no options left after this season so they are on the big squad to stay.

Bay is good, Manny is one of the most feared hitters of all time. Horrible deal for Boston, at least this year. I think you're way overestimating the extent to which Manny poisoned the Sox clubhouse...he didn't. The only ones who had a problem with him were management. The fans loved him and his teammates loved him. His attitude has always been bad, but his production is almost always staggering. Bay's an upgrade at defense but is moving from the NL to the AL, so the Sox took themselves out of the playoff race with this trade in my opinion. However, next year they can spend Manny's money on a quality shortstop, and they'll still have Bay.

LA got a good deal...for two months. I hope they regret it when LaRoche is tearing it up on the Bucs. Fingers crossed.

Correction: Manny WAS one of the most feared hitters of all time. He's 36 now, and he has started to go downhill. He's still definitely a star, but he and Bay are almost interchangeable as hitters. Look at their numbers this year. Take out the stolen base column and there is virtually no difference. It is possible that moving on from the Red Sox will revitalize Ramirez, but I wouldn't bet on it.

If Manny's teammates loved him last week after he hit flew out and proceeded directly from the batter's box to the dugout without so much as jogging to first, as Bob Walk reported seeing him do last week, then I'd trade the whole damn pack of them and start over with real ballplayers.
