Home runs are more rare, and offensive production is more in line with decades of baseball history. The years of 55, 60, 65 and even 70 HR's are over.

When Jason Bay hits 32 HR's, it is legitimate. He earned those home runs.

When Josh Hamilton crushes a ball 450', he did so because of his physical skills, not because of a doping regimen.

Back in the juice-freak era, like 2001, a legitimate HR threat like Willie Stargell would have been considered run-of-the-mill. 30 HR's? Pfffft. Tied for 40th, behind such greats as Phil Nevin, Brett Boone, and Rich Aurilia.

You know, I'm rereading "The Glory of Their Times" for the third time right now and it's given me a very interesting insight.

Between 1962 and 1966, Lawrence Ritter traveled across the country interviewing players who played during the early years of the game. We're talking about guys like Hank Greenberg, Sam Crawford, Chief Meyers, and Fred Snodgrass.

What's funny is that when these old timers compare baseball in the 60s to their era, they think that the ball is juiced and the game isn't the same.

I guess every generation thinks the game has changed from what they thought it should be.
