Burnett pitches the rest of this year in relief, if only because the Pirates move one of their lefty relievers.

Next year, if he is still brining it at 91 mph, and can spot his curve and change, he may be a candidate to compete for a starting spot.

nah, I can see him evolving into a 7th or 8th inning guy though.

If the Buccos get starting pitching help, then that makes sense. However, at this rate, the Pirates are going to be desperate for starters who can get through the 5th inning.

The first place to look for help is in the organization. The minors are pretty barren in terms of starting pitching. Converting a reliever makes the most sense ... Yates, Osoria, Grabow (if he is still here), Capps? Uhhhh, no.

Burnett, unlike those guys, had success in the minors as a starter before his elbow problems. He won games in the minors as a starter. He is now throwing 91-92 mph.

I understand that the velocity will go down when he is called on to go 6-7 innings, but if he is dealing at 90 mph and can spot his offspeed stuff, he is the best starting pitching candidate that the Pirates may have.

say what you will but if Duke is in this rotation
I see no reason why he should be looked over
for the likes of JVB or Herrera
NONE.

I can give you a few reasons. One, he asked to be permanently switched to relief back in spring training. Two, he throws at least 4 mph harder out of the bullpen than he ever did as a starter. Third, in his last 52 starts in AAA and the majors he put up a 5.01 ERA. Fourth, he can't get righties out. He's much better out of the bullpen.

Yeah, I've been thinking the exact same thing over the last couple days. If we are that hard up, just give Burnett the ball and try to stretch him out.

I agree. Give him a shot. It seems he has never been given the leash that others have. JVB may have had more success in the minors, but Burnett had some success as a starter in the majors, where it counts.

I'm not suggesting making him a cornerstone of the rotation. But throwing him out there for 5 starts and seeing what happens makes sense to me.

If you call a 5.02 ERA success as a starter in the majors, then you're right.
