New York Yankees increase pursuit of Pirates' Bay, Nady

Hideki Matsui's uncertain status for the rest of the year has caused the Yankees to increase their interest in Pittsburgh outfielders Jason Bay and Xavier Nady.

A major-league official familiar with the Pirates organization, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of trade talks, said the Yankees also have interest in lefty relievers Damaso Marte and John Grabow.

"It's going to take a little bit of time," the official said of Pittsburgh's evaluation of Yankees prospects. "I think with recent events, (the Yankees) would like to add a bat."

Pittsburgh wants more for Bay than Nady, the former Met; both are right-handed hitters who would help balance the Yankees lineup.

Minor-league outfielders Austin Jackson and Jose Tabata and pitchers such as Ian Kennedy are names that could be discussed. Melky Cabrera does not interest the Pirates, who have All-Star Nate McLouth in center field.

Bay or Nady could split left field/DH for the Yankees with Johnny Damon. Going into last night's game at Colorado, Bay (an All-Star in 2005-06) was hitting .285 with 19 homers and 54 RBI and Nady was batting .321 (fifth in the NL) with 12 homers, 56 RBI and 10 outfield assists.

How Richie Sexson fares in the next few days could affect the Yankees' plans.

Through Friday's game, Marte had held lefties to a .245 average, and Grabow had allowed left-handers a .256 mark.

The Pirates see Marte as a solid setup man and not a lefty specialist and thus are asking for a fair amount in return. With Matt Capps on the disabled list, Marte has served as Pittsburgh's closer and went 3-for-3 in save chances just before the All-Star break.

In fact, the official said, Pittsburgh isn't dead set on parting with any of the four players. The Pirates would like to acquire prospects to help rebuild, but they could also keep the big-leaguers and make a run at finishing .500 for the first time since 1992.

At least NH realizes that Melky wouldnt be considered much of anything if he wasnt wearing pinstripes...

The next 11 days will be very interesting methinks...

No to Ian Kennedy. The last thing we need is another overrated starting pitcher.
