Karstens has 5 good innings in him? No more. No less. Try to push it further and everything goes to hell. I was calling for him to be pull after 5 today and what happens in the 6th?

They should have the bullpen up after 5 every time he pitches. It's the fool me once, fool me twice thing, right???? :? :? :? :?

They need to have the bullpen up and ready after 5 for Maholm and Duke too...The 3 of them are built for 5 to 6 innings max

I see Maholm go deeper. But, certainly for Karstens.

I am wondering if we are seeing the results of getting what you teach? The Pirates are so protective of the 100-pitch count that they could be teaching/protecting to the point that 100 is all you get, because that is all you ask.

This is the thesis behind Ryan and Maddux in Texas and the guys in San Fran.

I think that philosophy is sound provided you have a strong Bullpen and starters that will keep you in the game for 6 or 7 innings or approximately 100 pitches. When your starters give up lots of runs early (Duke and Maholm lots of times and others) or your Bullpen can't hold a lead, then you you have problems.

It saves arms over a long season when the starters and the Bullpen are strong and working together.

Unfortunately the Pirates haven't been able to get the two entities in sync for most of the season.
