An interesting concept.

Here's another innovation being tried this season (not that it's applicable to the Pirates): The Red Sox AAA affiliate in Pawtucket has a knuckleballer named Charlie Zink in its rotation. He's considered Major League-ready but is blocked by Tim Wakefield. As long as he remains in the Boston system, he is on a schedule that calls for him to pitch on the same day(s) that Wakefield starts. That way, should anything happen so that Wakefield can't make his next start, Zink can be called up and plugged right in without any need to adjust the Sox rotation.

If only the Pirates had such a luxury . . .
