Going to be a slug-fest. We gotta outscore them.

Hope JVB does ok, he's at home and running out of chances with the Pirates.

Who's available to relieve tonight? He needs to go 6 and may be allowed in too long trying to get to the 7th inning. Russell may look bad tonight.

Jesus H. Christ.

Ok, I'll never complain about Freddy batting second again. Please just get Rivas out of there. Bat him 9th for heaven's sake.

Actually, seeing Rivas batting second again reminded me of what Charlie had written over at Bucs Dugout after last night's game. It struck me as funny, so I'll share it.

Quote:
Do you like it when the Pirates score runs? Games like these can make you wonder whether John Russell does. It appeared the third base umpire tonight wanted the Pirates to score more than Russell did. (At least the ump called Ryan Doumit safe on a play in which he appeared to be out.) On your way home after a game like this one, you may have found yourself wondering whether Russell actively dislikes runs or is merely ambivalent toward them. If someone gave Russell some runs for his birthday, you might think, would he take them and use them, even though he would've preferred, say, a shower radio? If Russell were at a restaurant and the waiter brought a big plate of runs he hadn't ordered, would he send them back because he ordered the shrimp? Tough questions!

Thanks, Rivas, for making me look like a jackass (like I needed any help). I'll just shut up now. Obviously, John Russell is a genius...just misunderstood by the likes of me.

I have a sneaky feeling we're looking at a 12-11 game tonight.

This is painful. I, for one, have been in JVB's corner all along, hoping eventually he'd figure it out. But I have to agree with whomever it was who wrote a little while ago that he's fast running out of chances. Doesn't seem as though he'll ever be more than a AAA pitcher or, at best, the last guy out of the bullpen for the parent club -- the one you use when you're on the road and down by 6 runs going into the bottom of the 8th inning.

What the hell was Rivas doing on that double? The relay gets to Jack and Rivas isn't even standing at the base. I think they had a chance to get him but Rivas is standing four feet away from the base.

:o

2-1/3 innings. 5 hits. 5 earned runs. 2 homers and a double. ERA up to 10.64. Wow.

Sad.

Ah, yes. 3 HRs. Sorry, BB, my bad. Got to give Jay Bruce his due, I suppose.

As I watch JVB leave, I wonder if he would have been a legit MLB hitter.

And why couldn't the Pirates pull an Ankiel and at least give it a try. Seriously, what do they have to lose.

Tough night for Jimmy Barthmaier in his first start back at Indianapolis.

Gives up 5 hits (one a 3-run HR), 3 walks, and a wild pitch in 4 innings . . . so far.

As much as it pains me to defend Rivas, I saw the play a bit differently, BB. The only way they nail the runner is if the throw is on the bag. A relay from Jack would be too late, I believe. So when the throw was 5 feet off the line towards RF and Jack had to go get it, Rivas gave up the bag to back up Jack on the throw. I think it was the right choice. Having said that, if the throw is on line, Rivas has to be on the bag to get it, and Jack has to let it go through to him.

Injured shoulder for X-Man? What injured shoulder? 3-3 with 2 HRs and 3 RBIs.

Triple for LaRoche. Is it just Cincinnati pitching, or has the lad finally -- finally -- found his stroke?

Don't look now, but Sean Burnett has only given up 1 earned run in his last 8.1 innings. Then again, even Vogelsong had a stretch or two like that.
