The Pirates today will recall outfielder Nyjer Morgan from Class AAA Indianapolis, a clear sign they are about to place Xavier Nady on the 15-day disabled list.

Nady, whose left shoulder was bruised Saturday in Baltimore, began swinging off a tee yesterday morning. He is expected to swing again today but, with the Pirates losing the luxury of the designated hitter by returning to PNC Park, his apparent inability to play for an extended stretch would be costly.

If he goes on the disabled list, it will be retroactive to the day of the injury, and he would come off June 30.

Morgan batted .239 with 10 RBIs and 19 steals after being demoted.

.239 at AAA and he's the guy to come up? Geez...I'd rather have Thompson, or Craig, or Pearce than Morgan...ahhhh!!! Freakin lack of depth in the minors...

I wonder if we signed Alvarez this morning if we could have him in uniform by 7pm tonight?

It is especially problamatic that Nady is going to be out of the line up for a couple of weeks.

Both he and Doumit, the two highest averages on the team and a couple of the strongest power guys both missing too much. Can't help.

It is a sure sign of the weakness of the pitching staff that we are scoring plenty of runs with this situation as well as Freddy and Laroche way below expectations.

This just continues to get more and more depressing doesn't it?

We'll need CPR by the time this home stand is over. Bring on the paddles.... 'clear' -- can we get a heart beat.

The Toronto pitching staff is quivering in fear. Secret Weapon Nyjer will turn this club's fortunes around.

I'm with you, buccoboy, I would have rather seen Thompson, Craig Wilson, hell even Boeve.

I think it is now possible to field the worst lineup in MLB history:

Nyjer- CF
Rivas-SS
Michaels-LF
LaRoche-1B
Doug- RF
Bautista-3B
Gomez-2B
Chavez- C
Pitcher- P

Dear God.

1st i'm not buccoboy, I'm afraid to be buccoboy, hell i'm afraid to be me...

and 2nd, keeping Gomez in that lineup makes it stronger taking Sanchez's bat out of the lineup...

For the shitty lineup, I propose keeping Freddy in...

Whoops...sorry about the mix up, I must have been hitting the whiskey bottle in my desk drawer pretty hard this morning, eh?

Yeah, I concur that Sanchez is probably the weaker link, but I figured if I included him someone would point out that he has had a good game here or there lately and is starting to come around, yadda yadda, so I went with the bench player Gomez.

I think I might go to the game tonight...I truly hope Russell would use that lineup. I mean, if we are going to get our asses handed to us, at least I could see a perfect game by Halladay.

Quick update...apparently Salas was sent down, Nady did NOT go on the DL.

Maybe they will use Tike, er, Nyjer to pitch mop up duty since he can't hit   .

Heh. I was just comparing Tike to Nyjer this afternoon myself upon hearing the news that he was recalled.

That isn't even close to the worst lineup I've ever seen, let alone the worst in history.

Dear God.

Get a load of this lineup. You might want to shield your screens so that no children are exposed to this, and make sure you have an empty stomach.

White Sox at Athletics

Here is the starting lineup for the A's, along with their stats for that season:

How's that? A whole lineup of Luis Rivas lookalikes.

The A's got three of those guys from us. We traded them Page, Edwards, and Tony Armas for who.. Phil Garner? I can't remember. We sent them Manny Sanguillen, too. Or was that how we got Chuck Tanner? I really can't remember. I guess Miguel Dilone played for the Indians after this. The 1976 Charleston Charlies had Armas, Page, Edwards, Willie Randolph.. a lot of future Pirates including Rod Scurry.

Ollie, according to Baseball Reference, Garner was . . .

Quote:
March 15, 1977: Traded by the Oakland Athletics with Chris Batton and Tommy Helms to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Dave Giusti, Doc Medich, Doug Bair, Rick Langford, Tony Armas, and Mitchell Page.

As for Sanguillen-Tanner, here is how BR puts it:

Quote:
November 5, 1976: Traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Oakland Athletics for Chuck Tanner and $100,000.

April 4, 1978: Traded by the Oakland Athletics to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named later, Miguel Dilone, and Elias Sosa. The Pittsburgh Pirates sent Mike Edwards (April 7, 1978) to the Oakland Athletics to complete the trade.

Wow.. interesting stuff. That was a good trade. Garner was a vital cog for us.

The other deal.. we got a manager and $100,000. I wonder what we did with the money. Man, nobody makes trades like that anymore. Didn't the Cardinals trade Joe Torre to the Mets while he was their manager too?
