Well, I guess the jinx has been broken. As many recall I went to Greece in '04 and Germany last year, and those trips coincided with Bucco losing stretches that pretty much ended their hopes for the season each time.

When I left on Tuesday June 3, I think they were four games under .500 and I did not see a single score or standing the whole time I was in Europe. Well I got into Dulles on Saturday and sure enough the Bucs were only two games under the break even point. Not only did they not step on their d**ks they actually improved.

I tell you I was practicaly trembling when I bought a copy of the Wash Post and turned to the sports section. Although I was not happy at seeing they had blown a huge lead to the O's the night before in order to fall two back rather than reach .500 but Oh well.

Molte Bene! Molte Bene AZ. Saw Venice, Florence (including the Uffizi Gallery), Assisi, Rome, Capri, Pompeii and Sorrento.

Walked a bunch. A whole bunch. In fact, I think I have messed up my left knee.

Did not realize that Venice is no longer a "working" city. It is a tourist site run by the Italian government, the only people living there work in the tourist trade.

In Sorrento we had an interesting experience. We checked into our hotel and the local teens came over and challenged our boys to a soccer match behind the church. The lady who ran the hotel was British and she said they do that to every bus group that comes in. She added the last group was trounced 20 - nil. Our boys took up the challenge and we did okay, despite only having one player who had ever played soccer. And guess who took his turn in goal at the age of 42? :D Did my part as they only scored about six on me. Final score 22 - 8 and we had scored first. Not bad.

Rome is a pretty dirty city, lots of walking.

Got to see the Pope at his weekly audience and just missed Bush's motorcade by minutes the next day.

The Sistine Chapel is one of those places that "pictures do not do it justice." Breathtaking. As was St. Peters.

Pompeii was interesting as was the port city of Ostia. Did not get to see the dirty drawings at Pompeii though. :o

Wanted to find a Carthage-Rome chess set but could not find one. Odd, I thought that would be a no brainer in Italy.

Overall, still jet lagged and my knee hurts.

Thanks for asking.

Welcome back Corsair. My father's side of the family are from Southern Italy (Calabria).

Bucs are hanging in there!

Corsair, what are your impressions of Firenze? Did you find any buys on gold or leather on the Ponte Vecchio? Or has it become too tacky to bother with anymore?

I can see why they emigrated - Reggio Calabria is the poorest region of Italy.
Very dry and dusty - spaghetti westerns were filmed there - but lots of historical monuments like ampitheatres.
