or not...do you really think the Pirates will spend ~$20M on one player in the 1st round? If so, what would that do to the rest of our draft?

Would it even make sense to do that if it were possible?

I'm just not sure that move would make sense.

Is there a big difference between the likely number one and two picks for next year? Given the strategy used in this years draft it would seem surprising for the Pirates to commit too much to the first pick unless there's a big drop off in talent after the first couple of players.

At this point, I'm not sure finishing worst or second worst matters in the context of the current season. Do we feel it matters that much for the future?

He won't be that expensive. Most are saying he won't touch Strausburg numbers. Besides, he wants to sign under the current draft system, not the draft system that is about to be negotiated after next year. Even the players are sick of the current draft system, because they would rather the big contracts go to current players than 18 year old kids. Here is just one article.

If we drafted Harper we could say "we'll give you $7-8 mil, if you don't take it you'll be drafted next year under a slotting system (possibly) and you'll get less"

I'll take that to mean "yes".

With as much as we have spent on the draft the last few years combined with the lack of payroll we will have next season, I would say we could absolutely afford to sign this kid. Let's go "Natinals"!

Is this kid the consensus number one pick? How close could a 16 year old kid be to being a major league player?

Yeah, I think he is consensus #1. He could probably be in the bigs at 19-20 yrs old, according to most reports I've read.

He can throw in the 90's and is hitting 500 ft towering shots...I agree he's probably number #1

Harper plays C. If the Pirates draft him and he succeeds in the low minors, then they have a glut of top-end talent at C.

Not a bad thing, no question, but the issue is whether or not Harper would be moved. Sanchez is quite good defensively, so if he hits 15 HR's and gets on base at a .350 or better clip, he plays C.

You'd think he might make a move from behind the plate so he can be in the lineup more and not need the rest from the demands and punishment a body can take behind the plate...I'd want his bat in the lineup every day and wear and tear on a catche can sometimes kill their bat by the end of the season...

My reading of the SI article was that Harper can play damn near where ever you want him to, including pitcher. I thought the SI article scouts had projected him eventually to RF???

At 6'3" and 205 he'd look nice at 3rd base
