After Bucfan put the whole "fact check" thing on me, I went a searching and found a bunch of notes and blogs from Yankee types saying Tabata was first noticed by a Yanks area scout at 14, signed the day he turned 16 and off we go.

Now, I don't know this, but is 14 a common age to notice and start tracking a kid's development?

For players in the Dominican, it is normal for scouts to follow them beginning at at 14 since the signing deadline is the player's 16th birthday. Moreoever, the players often sign with scouts who have known them for a while and have spent time with their families. That is part of Gayo's job for the Pirates.

I am presuming that it is somewhat similar, at least, in Venezuela.

Tabata homered for the second time in the past 4 games. So far in AAA, Tabata is hitting .351/.400/.512. His .912 OPS is pretty remarkable for a guy in AAA who just turned 21 a few days ago.

Great to see that he is not struggling with the higher level competition when moved from AA to AAA. If his defense is as good as advertised, and if he continues to hit AAA pitching like this, he will be playing RF by June of next year. That would move Garrett Jones to first, and improve both the hitting and OF defense quite a bit.

I am intrigued by a Pirates team next summer that would feature the following line-up. The players ages are noted in parentheses:

CF McCutchen (22)
2B Young (27)
3B Laroche (25)
1B Jones (28)
C Doumit (28)
LF Milledge (24)
RF Tabata (21)
SS Cedeno (26)

Average age for the 8 potential starters by midway 2010 would be 25. That would have to be the youngest starting line-up in the majors.

Indeed. And pitching depth is abundant - Daniel McCutchen, Brad Lincoln, Tim Alderson are all in the upper minors. Jose Ascanio is a power arm who is a potential starter. Those four are good enough to challenge for starting jobs with quite a few teams.

What a great time to be a Pirate fan!

Are you not entertained?

For the first time in about 10 years, I can't wait for the next two seasons!

I love Cutch, impressed by Young, intrigued by Jones, CAN'T WAIT FOR TABATA!

Seriously, how are people still not on the bandwagon?

Bonds and co were LONG time ago. Time to move on and ride the NH wave of the future.

I know that Bucfan sets the pictoral standards here, but the burghermeister is coming with a bullet.

Tabata is a legit 21 year old.. just turned 21 on August 12th. Venezuela doesn't have the birth certificate problems that the Domincan Republic has.

To answer someone's question..scouts look at those kids when they are as young as 11. They keep tabs on them (see them at the baseball academy, talk with them, etc..) to chart the players progress. When the kid turns 16, if he is good enough to play pro ball, the kid gets signed..

Absolutely (particularly where curve agrees with Bucfan). The final score is 2-1, in favor of Bucfan/curveradio over ZM.

And no, there is no protest allowed for this score, Mike.

I just about gushed over curveradio in a post about Pedro's glove at 3rd. You are correct, I take his posts similar to No. 9's blog on the Post-Gazette site...

Ha, won't have to. I have "friends" in Altoona who make really, really, REALLY good pizza. Comp to Pedro along with beer.

We'll get him to 1b...
