John Smoltz will resume his major league career, agreeing to a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The former Cy Young winner was released Monday by the Boston Red Sox after struggling as a starter. He agreed to a deal Wednesday with the NL Central-leading Cardinals.

The 42-year-old Smoltz is expected to join the Cardinals on Thursday in San Diego.

Are he and Favre channeling the same ghost of Gordie Howe?

I think this will be a good move for both sides, and if it doesn't work out it doesn't really hurt either side also.

It's a $100,000 contract for the rest of the season, with a chance at starting, and a possible move to the setup man position come the playoffs...

How bad is the Cards' rotation that John Smoltz is an upgrade? He would rank about number 9 on the Pirates in terms of starting potential, behind the present 5, Daniel McCutchen, Jose Ascanio, and even Brad Lincoln, IMO. He has nothing left - as his work this year has proven.

Classic example of a guy who hung around too long.

It more than likely is that, but if i was in his position i wouldn't hang them up until i get a chance at being a reliever. If he fails the rest of the season with the Cardinals i think he will retire.

Clearly ... but unlike Smoltz, I never had "my day." I went directly from irrelevance to hanger-on.
