No need to fear, Brian Bixler is here!!!

Perry Hill is showing him the ropes of 1st base to add to his utility man status...

Quote:
Newly recalled Brian Bixler, a 2004 second-round choice once considered a potential starting shortstop in the Pirates' future, is a utility man for the rest of the season. He may even play first base, where coach Perry Hill continues to work with him.

"He'll be playing all over," Russell said. "That's one of the things we got him doing in Indianapolis. He played some outfield, second, short. He can play third, he can play first. ... That gives him a lot of flexibility right now.

Please say it aint so. I would rather see us go out and get another Vasquez type super-sub than see Bixler on the field or even pinch hitting. If they wish to give this guy another shot at a bench spot, so be it. It's not like it will matter much probably since we can use him at least until the end of the season. If and when he fails, hopefully it will be time to DFA him. The only thing that worries me is hopefully he doesn't take time from Clement or whoever else we call up that has a good shot in Septemeber (might have been Tabata till he got hurt).

As part of its "speed up the game" rules, Major League Baseball announced that Brian Bixler gets just one strike per at bat. MLB spokesperson Donald Sutter explained, "Look, he is going to fan anyway. Why wait for three strikes?? Move it along and have him K on the first swing-and-miss or called strike."

When asked if Bixler could not frustrate this measure by fouling pitches off, Sutter chortled and pointed out that foul balls require the batter to put the bat on the ball.

Calls to Bixler's agent were not returned, since nobody claims to be his agent.

Bixler does have the K numbers to be a slugging 1st baseman, but thats all...

No slugging first baseman in the history of the sport - not Brad Eldred, not Ryan Howard, not Whiffee Missalot - K'ed 54 times in 140 plate appearances (39%). That K rate is higher than a lot of pitchers.

And Bixler's career OPS is .447. No, that is not his slugging - that is his combined slugging and OBP.

To put that into perspective, a .447 would currently rank 90th in the majors in slugging percentage alone, among qualified batters.

That's amazing. Mario Mendoza had a career OPS of .507. So Bixler is a full 60 points below the Mendoza OPS Line.
