Freddy Sanchez rode the bench again yesterday for the Giants, this time with a sore shoulder. Sanchez currently sits at 418 plate appearances. The Giants have 49 games remaining. So Sanchez will have to average 3.72 PA per game the rest of the way to reach 600 and have the $8M option for next year automatically vest. Thus far this season, he has averaged 3.7. It could be close.

One thing that I'm not certain about: do post season plate appearances count toward the 600? If so, the Pirates could help Freddy earn his payday by knocking the Rockies down another notch or two.

It's his right shoulder. The one that required surgery back in 2007 and caused him to miss time in 2008 and this season. If the Giants fall out of the wold card hunt it will be interesting to see how they deal with Freddy's PAs. Unlike Pittsburgh, they have no emotional connection to him and wouldn't have to face any public outcry.

But they would have to face a grievance filed by the MLBPA, and they would have to live with a tarnished reputation that would hinder their ability to negotiate with players in the future. Sitting Sanchez for the sole purpose of avoiding the option would be a colossal mistake.

Freddy's been hot since the trade. I'm sure SF wants his bat in the lineup down the stretch.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I thought the Giants were talking about picking up the option even if he doesn't reach the 600 PA's.

FWIW, Sanchez played yesterday and played well (2 for 5 with a BB). I guess the shoulder must be ok. Glad to hear it.

Updating this thread:

Sanchez has missed six straight games and could be headed to the DL. He now sits at 433 PAs with 38 games left in the season. Therefore he needs to average 4.39 PAs per game. Not looking good.

I hope nothing happens to where the Pirates need to take him back in a trade...I'd hate to lose Alderson

Hadn't thought of that. Hopefully someone who understands that whole process will weigh in.

They would have addressed that issue long ago. Heck, the White Soxt took Peavey while he was on the DL and he still is.

He has had 58 plate appearances for the Giants. He was on the bench for the Pirates due to the shoulder condition. The Giants had him examined prior to or immediately after the trade.

The Giants knew what they were getting, and received the benefit of 17 hits, a HR and 5 RBI's from Sanchez. Waaaaay too late for them to try and void the trade due to uknown or undisclosed injury.

You hit the keywords Bucfan, unknown or undisclosed. There was neither. Giants knew what they were getting.

The trade is a done deal. Nothing can change that.

Does the UCC consider baseball players "goods?" Because that sounds like something straight out of my Contracts review. ;)

Only if they are actually good.

Freddy is good. It's too bad for him, I bet this is tough on him.
