Who will DH for us in Baltimore and Chicago? If the current rotations stay in place we will not face an Orioles left hander, and Buehrle is the only lefty in the White Sox rotation. Mientkiewicz will be starting?

Ralphie - I agree this has turned into a fun little game on the board.

As far as my predictions for this 22 game series:

D'backs 2-2
Nats 1-2
O's 2-1
White Sox 0-3
Jays 1-2
Yankees 2-1
Devil Rays 2-1

Overall: 10-12

I imagine it will be a round robin of DHers...Maybe Freddy one night, to give his shoulder a rest but to keep his bat in the lineup, maybe a night of Bay to bring Michaels into the lineup, possibly Doumit to go with the better defensive guy behind the plate, maybe LaRoche and give Gomez or Doug Meint a start at 1st...

It could be a way to give everyone rest from the field while keeping their bats in the lineup...

BD - very pessimistic, my man. The Buccos take 2 of 3 from a terrible Nats club and go 5-17.

I personally can't wait to see the Pirates-Rays series.

History indicates that the Pirates HAVE had a very difficult time. It doesn't indicate how things are going to go this year.

My belief is that this is a different team and that the results will be much better this year.

What was I thinking?!?!? :o Yes, 5-17 is more like it Bucfan...

IF the Pirates can beat Randy Johnson and Arizona today, I will then change my opinion on this next stretch of games. Well, let's say I'll be more hopeful!

Since the game is not on Fox today, we'll have to listen and see if BD will be forced to change his prediction. I feel good about our chances today. Don't know why but I think we're good today. :o :o :o :o :o

GO BUCS

Well, we beat Randy Johnson. Guess he didn't take enough Viagra.

See what I mean? Things are different this year. This team doesn't roll over and die like they did in prior years.

Gotta get at least 2 from the Nats.

I agree. Would really like to see them get a taste of .500. I think that would give them another confidence shot in the arm and finally push them over that hump. This team can play better than it has.

In a related matter, it will be interesting to see what NH does come July should the Pirates be more than a few games over .500. I still believe he needs to move players for young talent, but that poses a public relations backlash should he decide to go that way. It will be a tough decision, but it's a good tough decision. A nice change of pace after many years of bad tough decisions!

One game at a time. First we need to get there and it has been a major problem when playing the American League. But surely our guys have more confidence this morning after what I consider a huge win for them.
That really was a team effert from starting pitching to relievers to defense and even offense as everyone was working together to make it happen. Now, maybe we have the formula.

What do you think Bassoon-man? Are you getting a little more optimistic? Want to change your thoughts about these 22 games?

Being from Maryland, I take a lot of crap about being a Pirates fan. We HAVE to take 2 of 3 from the Orioles, especially the Friday night game, which I am taking my son and several of his friends to for his birthday.

If there is an organization that comes close to the disarray that the Pirates have shown the last 15 years, it is the O's.

AZ- 2-2
Nats- 2-1
O's- 2-1
Sox- 1-2
B.J.s 2-1
Yanks 1-2
Rays- 2-1

12-10

Way to go out on a limb there, brad.

Following your cue, I plan to post my prediction on these 22 games on June 30. Even still, I could be wrong...

I nominate that as the MLB Quote of the Year.

Dougie would have knocked Big Unit into the next century.

Johnson has always put on this "I'm a bad ass" attitude. I would like to see him take a swing at some guy 10 inches shorter than him. I would also like to see how his cranky back would react to it.

I am still going to take it one game at a time.....right sub? I am becoming more hopeful mainly because of the people who are running this team now from the manager to the FO.

IF the Pirates can win these next three games against the Nats, I will definitely feel much much better about this team. The Nats are a team the Pirates must dominate to reach that .500 mark and get above it. The Pirates need to begin to start separating themselves from the bottom teams by winning the series against those teams or by sweeping all of the games against those teams.

When I will REALLY believe things have changed is when the Bucs begin Interleague play. If they can manage to stay at .500 with the AL teams, then I think I'll be really be ready to celebrate!

I know. I'm with you. Can never gain real comfort with them because they always fall apart.

Let's just make them win.

On Monday, Mientkiewicz had a chance to respond to Johnson's comments.

"I've been on a stretcher before and, technically, he's been out of the game for three years in my mind," Mientkiewicz said, alluding to Johnson's seasons with the Yankees and his injury-plagued 2007 campaign. "That just shows me how mentally weak he is. That's why he got out of [New York]."

Johnson played in New York from 2005-06 before returning to the D-backs rotation in '07.

"New York beat him down, let's put it that way," said Mientkiewicz, in no mood to apologize for his outspokenness. "He doesn't have intimidating stuff anymore, so I'm not going to stand for it."

"It affected him completely," Mientkiewicz said. "I know how mentally weak he is. I tried to take the high road, [but] not anymore."

I love it!! Lets hope Johnson makes it into August when next they play.
