I saw him play a few times at the world port tournament here in holland and was completely impressed by
the athleticism by this guy.. fun to see, basebal minded and enjoyed every play he made..

he also was one of the few spotlights for south-africa on the baseball classics and yes.. me too hope this kid
will be a good bucco for years.

13-- thanks for posting that. Story made my day. Shows to go ya, how tuff it is in much of the world. But the human spirit just continuies to try.

The club house guy, Pat, seems like a special guy too. Doesn't surprise that he's a friend of Maz. There's a couple of great human beings. Naturally they both are from towns right across the river from me.

Shows a really special nature of all those mentioned.

Great story. Great, Great writing.

I'll certainly be rooting for this kid. Hope Wilton doesn't get on him too much about his plate discipline.

Nah, its Wiltons' job to get on him about plate discipline, I wouldn't have it any other way. No special treatment around here.

If he shows plate discipline, I won't get on him for it.

I am rooting for the guy. How can you not. Should be required reading for any young player. Wow!

What's on the horizon for this kid- the AFL? Might he play in State College or WVA next season?

Thx for posting the story, PF13. Pretty amazing information about a young man hoping to play baseball for a living. The story also contained the following observation that I think we all need to read and re-read whenever we feel like ripping a player for a bad game:

"He'd never seen a ballplayer with less sense of entitlement or more joie de vivre, but the clubbie couldn't violate his bedrock rules: Never ask too many questions. Never get too attached. Sure, Gift would most likely return the next spring and summer to play for Class A Bradenton, but Pat had seen too many good kids sobbing on their dream's last day, had removed too many nameplates from their lockers and replaced them with new ones 15 minutes later."

It is sooo easy to forget that these are kids who always dreamed of playing baseball, who want nothing more than to succeed, who are devastated by bad games and poor results. They are young men experienced in succeeding at the sport, and some of whom are 19 and 20 years old and have basically no back-up plan once it is clear that they are not going to be professional baseball players.
