From Dejan's blog on today's game...

Quote:
5:30 p.m.: Some more from Russell ...

> "It's time to move on. These guy sin the clubhouse have a great opportunity to show they want to be a part of what's going on now and what's going on in the future in Pittsburgh. It's their time to show us what they can do and show us they can be part of this. We've got a lot of talent out there, and we've got a lot of talent coming. Neal put it best: We don't want to do this. We want to build around a club. We want to continue to get better and add pieces as opposed to having to trade to get pieces. That's one of the messages. This is the time. We want to start adding to this team, not taking away. Now it's time to turn the page and start playing winning baseball."

> "We want our fans to latch onto our team. We don't want to run one or two players up the flagpole and say, ‘This is the Pirates.' We want them to latch onto a lot of our players. ... There are a lot of different faces. I know it's frustrating. We want to win more games. I know the fans that see and understand what's going on, they're excited about our future. I think they're excited about today and where we're headed. Unfortunately, there are going to be fans who are very frustrated. That's understandable. They'll see what's going on. It's a great sports city. We're going to be one of those great sports franchises very soon. It's going to be fun here."

I applaud NH and FC for taking the bold steps to turn this thing around.

I'm excited and for the first time since the early '90's I now have hope again. I remember Jim Leyland giving a similar speech to his young Bucs way back when. To seize the moment, that they are in control of their own success and rise to stardom. That was when Bonds came on board in the early '90's. It was time to turn the Pirates back into a winning team to be recognized again in MLB, and it is again time for the Pirates to become one of the best teams in MLB.

Beat 'em Bucs!

Yeah but you know... Had we Kept Bay, Nady, McLouth, Freddy, Jack, Nyjer, Burnett, Grabow, Snell and Gorzelanny we'd be well..... we'd be in last place :D But you know, we can always throw more money back into the team to help them. You know, a few million to give Freddy new knees, a few million to put a bubble around Nady so he doesn't get hurt, actually a few more to one around Doumit as well, a few million to throw a rocket pack on Jason Bay's back so he could cover more than a quarter of Left Field, hit up the wizard of Oz to get Snell a brain, a few million to give Gorzelanny the abuility to pitch past the 5th inning under 100 pitches, Nyjer gets a few million for steroids so he can put one out of the park more than once a month, a few million to constrcut Jack a new body so he doesn't miss 170+ games in a 3 year span, a couple million to make Grabow a specialist at something since he's nothing mroe than just a 30 year old left handed relief pitcher, a couple bucks to Burnett for his card games and candles...

That about does it. We'd be fantastic!

I totally agree. One can disagree w/ the plan but NH has "fortitude" and he should be commended. He could have kept most of this year's team and been mediocre next year and no one would have complained.

I have to say although I'm excited I expect nothing but a horror show for the rest of this year and likely into 2010.
