DK reporting NO CASH in this deal. The Pirates just saved $8.4 million.

Ok guys look I am not screaming salary dump, but The pirates better put some of this money into the team either into Sano, or freeagency next year.

6:19pm: Kovacevic says that no money is being exchanged in the Sanchez deal, which makes it all the more impressive for the Pirates. Keith Law (Insider) recently ranked the 20-year-old Alderson the 26th-best prospect in all of baseball.

ESPN just reports it as "fact." Sanchez for Alderson. Setting aside the issue of whether this makes "baseball sense," I will miss watching this double play combo. I really enjoyed watching these guys play baseball. They seem to be good guys and it truly saddened me to watch Jack's reaction to being traded and I'm fairly confident that Freddy's reaction was similar.

Neither was a superstar but I think fans - particularly those who have laced up the spikes - have a tendency to pick favorite players who are similar to them. Me? Never a star. But always put out the proverbial 110%. Didn't mind - indeed, loved - catching both ends of a double-header in the afternoon and catching again that night. Always played my ass off and loved every minute of it.

Neither Freddy nor Jack were superstars. Never will be. But . . they played the game in a way that I admired; a way that I'd like to think that I'd play if I had been blessed with the ability.

So . . . for that . . . I'm sad tonight. I admit to getting "moist" eyes when Jack teared up in describing his feelings.

I'm not saying the deals were good, bad, salary dumps, steals in this post at all. Different issue entirely. I'm simply going to miss watching these guys play with a yellow "P" on their cap.

Sigh . . . . . . .

Great deal for us. It's about time we get a 1 for 1 deal with a actual good player involved.

This kid sounds like the real deal. I am just concerned all these pitching prospects we are picking up are doomed to more of these 1-0 games like Dukie got today. We got to do more with the bats. I didn't think we could weaken SS offensively until we got Cedeno. And for the record despite my concerns I like these trades. I was calling for a proper strip down and rebuild since Nate was traded and we have finally got it. And with a surprisingly good return.

NH made the best deal of his tenure in Pittsburgh today ... then blew it away a few hours later.

All in all, a fantastic day's work! :D

OK, so are we to assume that Delwyn Young is our new starting 2bman? I think our offens has got to see Milledge and Clement sooner rather than later.

Any word on who will take Freddy's roster spot?

My guess is Bixler or Milledge. If it is Milledge, I wonder if Tabata gets called up to AAA. The Indians have only two OFs on the roster and then there would be one.

I think that this is a very fair observation and I agree with you. The overhaul has been massive, and has resulted in a lot of salary (Laroche, Sanchez, McLouth, small portion of Wilson and Snell) being removed from the payroll. Pirates need to spend some of that money on Cain, Von Rosenberg, Sano, et al.

From FanGraphs:

P.S. The Pirates just got more value for Sanchez than Ricciardi could drum up for Halladay. That has to burn.http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/freddy-sanchez-for-who-seriously/

My initial reaction to this trade was "so-so" but the more I read the this looks like NH just got some payback for Matt Morris. Wow!

I suppose that makes the writers at FanGraphs NH apologists, right? I mean, by definition, the only way you could support any of these moves is if you swallow the BS that NH feeds you, right?

Well, it's quite obvious they don't know what they are talking about BBF. :)

Tim Alderson??!!

I know, WTF?!

Two weeks ago fans thought we could get Eric Young Jr. or Jonathan Sanchez and we end up with... Tim Alderson...

I hate to nitpick a trade so early, but I don't get it.

In my mind he is far and above more desirable than either Young or J. Sanchez.

Agreed. More of a risk, but I think even if he doesn't achieve his full potential he will still be better than J. Sanchez.
