The Pirates suck. They are on cruise control to the 17th losing season in a row. The economy blows too. However ownership is smiling like a butcher's dog as attendance although poor per MLB standards is higher than last year.
Givve the marketing division an A+....they sure know how to sell and promote all the other BS besides the pathetic team. BTW ever here one commerical to attend a Steeler game?

There you have it...the marketing plan in a nutt(ing)shell. Add to that the business plan to keep payroll low, make the people feel like they are getting something besides a bad team for their money and you have a profitable business within the framework of MLBs economics!

There is no validity in comparing marketing in football to marketing in baseball. A football team has 8 regular season home games. Baseball has 81.

Sure there is a difference in games but not with marketing. Many NFL teams still need to sell tickets and market their team. Not every team has a huge waiting list for tickets. There is validity...both are businesses and both need tickets sold. The Steelers situation is unique in that the team does not need to really market itself. Nice position to be in.

I think this is more a direct result of Pittsburgh being a little better off than many major citys during the economic downturn. We have not been hit as hard as many other places in the country (Detroit, LA, Miami).

I get a little tired of the fireworks and bobblehead talk. Haters act like ownership is raping the fans, but they don't often bring up how amzingly low the price of everything is at PNC. I brought my family out for a few games last year and was amazed even when compared to a moderately priced place like Miller Park. The food's better and cheaper than at any other ballpark I've been to, also.

Does anybody actually know how much the fireworks boost ownerships pockets? (i.e. cost of fireworks minus extra revenue created by higher attendance minus average extra revenue of a non-firework Saturday night game= ???)

The Gorzo middle finger bobblehead is a classic. Some of them are just dumb, but i do like so of the bobbleheads. I've seen too many fireworks in my lifetime to even both to walk outside if i see them. That wouldn't bring me to a game. I bet you tell little kids Ryann that Santa isn't real just to watch them cry.
Also if anybody is into collecting the bobbleheads, there is a local sale about 20 minutes from me in Ohio and you can get any one of them for under $10. I don't know if any bring value or not.

Some people act like only the Pirates are the ones with all these promotions...All the other teams run the same promotions, bobbleheads, fireworks, t-shirts, and bands...
