Ian Snell (2-4, 5.46) vs. Braden Looper (6-4, 5.05)

Bucs line-up:
1. McLouth CF
2. Rivas SS
3. Sanchez 2B
4. Bay LF
5. Nady RF
6. DOUG 1B
7. Bautista 3B
8. Chavez C
9. Snell P

So Chavez gets under start behind the plate, and LaRoche sits after his 0-5 outing last night. Will Snell be able to throw strikes?

I don't believe that today's game is going to be decided by our offense, although I kinda like it. No, the issue today as has been for a while -- starting Pitching. The real question is can Snell throw strikes? Will he continue to fall behind batters? will he continue to have too many walks?
Is his stuff good enough anymore?

BYW free tickets still mean money to the Pirates-- concessions, programs, parking all will be higher on Wed. and every dollar for a ticket also helps them. Plus they get people there which can stir more fan interest in future games.

Snell looked sharp in the bottom of the first. First pitch strikes, hitting the corner with velocity, and his slider is really moving. Good first, Ian - give us 7 more.

Ankiel with the amazing catch.

It would be more impressive if he was not an HGH using cheater. But hey, Tony's players have special dispensation to use steroids and HGH.

Rivas plays SS in Jack's stead.

I'm beginning to think getting the early lead is a bad thing. The opponent almost always matches it the next inning.

Well, that certainly lasted a while, eh?

Second inning: single, walk, single, single, single, and now Ian is looking at a 3-1 deficit and counting.

Sigh.

Hope I was wrong again. 8th inning and we're behind 7-4 but man on third. Maybe our offense can win it for us after all. Snell sure didn't.

Now two outs and haven't scored yet. Top of the order is scheduled for the 9th -- maybe, maybe...

Here's a troubling thought. This was Snell's 12th start of the season, and we could be in
for 20 more of these. He has had 32 starts in each of the past two years.

He was popping the fastball and his slider was very good. I just do not understand how he gets lit up with the stuff he has. I mentioned in another thread that he might be "tipping" his pitches. That would explain a lot.

He mentioned in today's paper that the ump was squeezing him all day.

He did get gyped on a couple of pitches, but that does not explain how he implodes in the second inning despite throwing pretty well. I don't knnow, maybe he needs to throw a third pitch (change or curve) more often . . . though in that respect, he threw quite a few curve balls in the game.

Snell said he had bad luck.
Russell said except for the five run inning he did well.

Accountability please. He has sucked for over a month now! Time for everyone to admit that.

Both Snell and Russell were talking about yesterday's game, not the past month.

My point is that you're criticizing what they said about one game because he hasn't pitched well in a month. Apples and oranges.
