Okay, I got this idea from another board, but thought it might be a nice way to have some GOOD discussion during the All Star Break.
Make up a lineup of your favorite 25 man team...not necessarily the BEST lineup, but the guys you liked to watch...and try to make it as complete of a team as you can... I am only going with a 10 man pitching staff though, and only one lefty in the pen, because these guys are so good, that is all I will need! Another rule...it has to be someone you actually saw play.

Manager: Chuck Tanner

C: Manny Sanguillen
1B: Willie Stargell
2B: Bill Mazeroski
3B: Bill Madlock
SS: Jay Bell
RF: Roberto Clemente
CF: Andy Van Slyke
LF: Jason Bay

Bench:
Mike LaValliere C
John Milner 1b--LF
Phil Garner 2b-3b
Tim Foli SS
Mike Easler 1b-OF
Dave Parker OF
Omar Moreno OF

ROTATION:
Bob Moose
Steve Blass
John Candelaria
Doug Drabek
Zach Duke

BULLPEN
Kent Tekulve
Dave Guisti
Goose Gossage
Grant Jackson
Sal Torres

MINORS (guys that did not quite crack the list, but ready to be called up as soon as needed!)

Don Slaught
Sid Bream
Al Oliver
Rennie Stennett
Freddy Sanchez
Jack Wilson
Richie Hebner
Lee Lacy
Craig Wilson
Barry Bonds
Bobby Bonilla
Nate McLoluth

Mike Dunne
Bert Blyleven
Jim Bibby
Bruce Kison
Jim Rooker

Terry Forster
Rich Loiselle
Jim Gott
Bill Landrum
Enrique Romo

Anybody have some different choices??

No Stan Belinda? BLASPHEMY I SAY!

I'd have Wally Backman on my bench with Orlando Merced and Jose Lind.

I thought for sure you'd have Lastings Milledge on there...must have been an oversight, huh? ;)

Actually, there is one glaring oversight: how in the world can you have Jason Bay ahead of Barry Bonds?

Not bad choices. Personally, Wally Backman wasn't here long enough for me...but I considered both Lind and Merced.

I would substitute Dick Groat in the starting lineup at short and the Quail, Bill Virdon in center. I would delete Spanky and add Tony Pena as the second catcher. Drop Milner and add Bob Robertson, the Mechanical Man. Drop Garner and add Rennie Stennett. Drop Foli and add Jack Wilson. Drop Moreno and add McCutcheon. Drop Moose and add Vernon Law. Drop Torres and add Elroy Face. Drop Milner and add Al Oliver. Add Richie Hebner. I should add Barry Bonds but I just don't like him. Thats it for me.

Well, it wasn't about the numbers, but actually, Bay and Bonds have very similar numbers for the Bucs.

Bonds had about 1000 more Pirate at bats, but only 37 more HR, only 96 more RBI, and not as good a batting average.

That's 'cause you're old. I never saw Groat, Virdon, Law, or Face play!

Pena is a good choice. I gave him some thought, but I really liked Spanky. Robertson was good, but I don't have a LOT of memory of him.

I like the topic. When I get up in the AM I'll dig a little further. I do know my man Johnny Ray is the captain of my team!

Hard to leave off Tony Pena. Bill Virdon is from my hometown. Use to hear about him a lot as a kid.

I started to make a list of my favorite Pirates but they're all basically from the '79 team (aside from Clemente, Freddy, Jason, and Ollie Perez.) Man I wish I could see my all-star Bucs play against the best all-time Yankees (in a Dream Series!!)

Age lets you see more players, sooo - - -

Add Ralph Kiner in there off the bench. And, maybe Wally Westlake or even Frank Thomas.

And, the ultimate guy off the bench was Smokey Burgess. He could hit fast balls. He could hit sliders. He could hit change-ups. He could hit curve balls. Only problem he has was that he couldn't catch any of them.

Smokey was a classic. I once saw him hit a pinch hit HR into the upper deck at old Forbes. Classic catcher build with a giant chew in his jaw.
