Who would play 2nd of Freddy is dealt? Delwyn Young can hit, but I just do not believe that he is anywhere near good enough to play the position defensively. Not even close.

Other than Young, the Pirates have nobody remotely close to being a productive hitter who could take over the position.

I agree 100%. Freddy is an All-Star. Good defense. Great hitter. Good guy. Not expensive. Nobody available to take his place. Unless I am getting a great return, Freddy would not be going anywhere.

He was last with the Giants, wasn't he? Maybe we could trade Freddy for the rights to Jose Castillo.

He's out of baseball from what I was looking at...

I really like Freddy, but if the price is right you have to make the trade...

John Bowker looks to be interesting...

Bowker is 25, Lefty 1B-OF, has 16 HR's, .349 avg, .453 on base%, .614 slugging%, 10 SB's at AAA...
Had 10 HR's in 111 games with the Giants last season, .255 avg, .300 on base%, .408 slugging%...

I was kidding ... trade for the rights to Jose Castillo? Nobody would take that as a serious suggestion from me, I hope.

If we trade middle infielders and get middle infielders in return, then what's the point? these two are the best DP combo in the league IMHO. I say extend them for 2-3 years. There is no better option....

I agree at this point. Maybe trade some pitching, extra OF for some middle infielders to develop...

The next question is who would you trade from the OF?

Snell and Gorzo would be my two top pitching trades...

Saw in the Pirate Blog on the Post Gazette, that the Pirates had scouts watching the Yankees with a possible Grabow trade

But overall Brian Friday has gone into a big slump at AA, Shelby Ford looks like a Ford Pinto, and Bixler is a complete dump

Well, obviously the first person I would move, and i would take a bag of balls for him is Lastings Milledge.

But, now that you have me thinking about it...most of our OF prospects are in AA or lower, so maybe we are not really well-stocked there.

Well there is no one to move. All of them are in AA or AAA with the exception of Mccutchen. There isn't much value for the other major league outfielders.

I think it is because they are assuming that they wont re-sign with us. The Giants are also very deep in the minors at 2nd and SS.

Here is something i found that i thought could be added to this. The last part is the new news.

Quote:
The Pirates and San Francisco have had trade talks regarding second baseman Freddy Sanchez and, to a lesser extent, first baseman Adam LaRoche, each of whom can be a free agent after this season. The Giants have had a scout following Sanchez, a source confirmed yesterday, and their interest in LaRoche goes back several months. Their preference at first base, though, is for a right-handed bat.

Sanchez sports a .316/.355/.477 line, a huge improvement on the .224/.280/.276 aggregate performance from Giants second basemen (primarily the demoted Emmanuel Burriss, though Juan Uribe has snagged recent starts). The Giants have a 1.5 game lead for the Wild Card, but their .705 team OPS ranks second-to-last in the NL. Sanchez's contractual situation will be a factor in the trade talks; an $8.5MM option for 2010 appears likely to vest. Charlie Manuel's All-Star selections will affect Sanchez's contract - if Sanchez makes the team the option vests with 600 plate appearances rather than 635. It figures to be between Sanchez and Zach Duke for the Bucs' representative.

Kovacevic adds that the Pirates have discussed Jack Wilson, John Grabow, and Matt Capps with teams, noting that those talks "vary in their intensity." In another article, Kovacevic digs deeper into the Grabow/Wilson/Sanchez situations. He believes the Pirates will seek shortstops and left-handed relievers in trades. I'm guessing the Pirates would find Jonathan Sanchez desirable (he's currently serving as the second lefty in the Giants' pen).

God do I hate feeling like roadkill with all the Vultures circling overhead...it's the same every year...tearing away whatever flesh that's left on the Pirates carcass...sigh

A couple things to keep in mind here:

1. This is Freddy's contract year. Offensively, this is as good as it's going to get. I'd really hate to extend his contract, just to have him revert back to his perfectly average career OPS+ of 100.

2. A second baseman hitting well in the final years of his contract should command about $10 mil a year on the open market (just a rough guess). I really don't see the Pirates spending that type of money to keep Freddy around, especially considering that the young talent will probably be peaking when he is already gone.

Hitting 300 plus is good enough. What do you expect from a second sacker? Almost none have HR power, and Freddy is at or near the top of doubles hitters every year. No offensively he's just fne. He only defeciency is in range at second. He field well and pivots great, he is where he's supposed to be, he husstles. Someone out there is better but no one can say Freddy is the reason we aren't winning.

Three time All-Star ought to say something even on our team. I say keep him and maybe even Jack for a couple more years. Jack has agreed to take less next year if they give him a couple years.

My endorsement means a trade is coming soon for both and Adam too.
