Dodger broadcaster Steve Lyons has a new book out about the most outrageous events in baseball history. Here is one that sounds impossible, but according to his research, has happened once. He didn't tell today's radio audience the answer because he wants us to buy the book of course. :D

Here is the situation. An UNASSISTED TRIPLE PLAY where the defense NEVER touches the ball.

That is a noggin scratcher. I think I have a possible soloution. Anyone else?

I have the solution, only because I have heard this one before. I am not going to give this one away.

I've read this one before, too. It was (I think) on ESPN's baseball page earlier this week in a piece on freak plays that have happened only once. Don't remember any reference to Steve Lyons's new book, tho'.

P.S. The solution requires that Manny Ramirez be the runner on both first and second.

I'm going to take a guess and say that the runner at bat runs outside the baseline, the ball hits the runner on second, the ball deflects off of him and hits guy at first.
Like I said, pure guess.

You are 1/3 of the way there.

I keep thinking of it as a "scoring decision" as well.

Back in 97 I went to Erie to see the Seawolves play (Saw Macowiak) and a ball was hit near the shortstop and the runner on second was ruled out due to "runners interference" I actually ran up to the official scorer in the press box and asked the official scoring decision (minor league baseball is wonderful isn't it? :D ) and he said "Runners interference; Six Unassisted, so that is where I keep going.

I keep thinking that it can't be "batted ball strikes runner" because runner is out and ball is dead.

So my guess is some combination of

"batter runs improperly to first" (a call I have only seen called on Pirates in my entire lifetime of watching baseball, no kidding)

tailing runner passes first runner on base paths, tailing runner out

and runner's interference on the lead runner.

The problem with that is, IIRC the ball is immediately dead when it hits the first runner and the batter gets first, so I don't think there can be a double play on that one batted ball.

I seriously doubt it. Mainly because there's only one Manny.

Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcet were actually the same person.

Too soon?
