I don't really believe in this, but it seemed that the team sparked when Russell got thrown out. Maybe young guys like this needed something like that to happen to get the rally going.

Thoughts?

Yes.

Good move by JR. He needs to show some emotion for his team once in awhile. Just talk to Bobby Cox or Lou Piniella.

I agree. I don't know if i want to see him getting tossed all the time, but i do like to see some emotion out of him.

What did you think of the call? I think it was really tough to tell.

I don't think he got thrown out on purpose per se, but I think you have to argue that intensely when your player (Nyjer) is hurt.

That was one where i couldn't even tell with my Tivo in high def.
It did hit his hand, but i can't tell if it hit the bat or his hand first.

From the article on the Pirate Web site about the Bucco win:

But after the man-of-the-night McCutchen doubled to lead off the sixth, Russell livened up the crowd.

With Nyjer Morgan squaring to bunt, Lee's first pitch hit off the outfielder's finger. Home-plate umpire Jerry Layne ruled the ball foul, claiming it hit Morgan's bat before catching the finger. Russell adamantly disagreed and was eventually tossed. It was his first ejection of the season.
The crowd, only the fourth to eclipse the 30,000 mark at home this season, suddenly stirred. So, too, did the club.

"Big ups to skip for getting us fired up," Morgan said. "He pumped us up there and that's exactly what we needed, a little fire."

Well that says it all. It motivated them forsure. Maybe they do need a Lou Pinella type manager, instead of how JR usually sits there in his comatose state. Young guys get motivated by managers acting like that sometimes.

It just shows to go ya--- even managing has a learning curve. I absolutely believe it was intentional. A person of his type doesn't all of a sudden just lose it. It was a key call that could have enabled us to win the game. A perfect time to arouse the big crowd and juice the players.

Finally, a great move and one that has been needed for a long time. Not to be used often, but when the time is right.

Team responded.

I so love good sarcasm, even at my own expense.

Oh, and you spelled "hooey" incorrectly.

It didn't but it motivated the Pirates to aggressively hold their bats on their shoulders.

Russell is a tool.

That was a judgement call on the umpires part, apparently he saw it/heard it better than Russell , who was some 60 feet away from the plate.

It was nice of him to wake up from his nap to go out and argue though. Even though i had no idea what he was trying to prove.

Andy Van Slyke, manager Pittsburgh Pirates, 2011.!!!

IMO.. it doesn't matter..when will these Major Leaguers stop wrapping their entire hand around the barrell of the bat to bunt? You are supposed to put your index finger against your thumb, and use your three other knuckles agasint the back of the barrell, and let the ball hit the bat to bunt. This way your hand/fingers should never get hit/hurt. It's not the pitchers fault that Nyjer had his hand wrapped around the part of the bat you are supposed to bunt with.

It was the right call by the ump, but I'm happy to see Russell show some emotion for a change. But, it also shows how clueless managers in this league are about bunting for some reason.
