Gotta play pretty much year round to move on to the next level unless you are a phenom like the Harper kid in Las Vegas. If you have the talent you need to get on a travel team or you will fall behind the guys that do. I know a some folks don't agree with that but it is almost essential for your development as a player.

Unless you're just doing it for fun and not as a potential career, which is the case for the majority of high school players.

Estrago and Ryann,

I posted this a couple of weeks ago and I think it needs repeating.

If the ownership was SOOOO happy to keep losing and raking in the cash, why bother with hiring a new GM? Or building a state of the art recruiting facility in the Dominican Republic?

Seems like those would be gigantic wastes of money, if you had no interest in trying to change the fortunes of your team.

Your theory is a conspiracy theory, simple as that. Truth is, this organization was managed HORRIBLY for more than a decade. It goes beyond the line up in Pittsburgh. You are only as good as your farm system, PERIOD.

Huntington gets that, where others didn't. Give Huntington 4 years to right the ship. If he doesn't, then you can scream.

I will say just for arguements sake, that if i was the owner and just trying to rake in the money i would've hired a new GM anyways. It would get the spotlight off of it being a setup just to get money. I don't think it is but hiring a new GM doesn't show me that they are making a turn for the better. It is what the GM is doing that says they are to me.

How about shelling out a truckload of cash to a highly touted draft pick?

The Arizona Cardinals sucked for years too. Now they don't. I really have confidence in Huntington and the moves he's making. McLouth is hitting .256. McCutcheon is a beast. Smart trade in my opinion.

Like I said, give Huntington time to turn things around from the bottom up. No one can do it in one year.

I agreed with the McLouth trade all along. I think the people that don't agree with it just don't understand the shape our minors were in.

I'm happy to have Andrew in center, instead of Nate. I liked McLouth, but Andrew is on his way to becoming a superstar in this league.

I think about it everyday now since somebody said it on this board about a week back. That nobody has made an impact in the majors for the Pirates like this since Barry Bonds.

They haven't shelled the cash out to a highly touted pick this year by drafting Sanchez. They passed on the highly touted to get a cheaper alternative.

Im not looking for a proffesional baseball career. Im not playing to be a pro and it is more to have fun and make the most out of high school. Im a decent player I lettered this season and I have a starting chance next year. But im not really looking to be a kid is in multiple baseball leagues and expects to go to the next levels.
I would have some interest in playing in college but that is unlikely to happen. Mabe for a small time school that doesn't offer scholarships.

Ryann, he was talking about Pedro Alvarez.

Yeah but I was talking about this year being the same as other years where they have passed on the highly touted to get the cheaper alternative.

Well, if the Pirates end up shelling out just as much cash as they did in last year's draft, the cheapness critique loses all credibility.

Wilton you are wrong because either way they took the cheapness route in the most important round the first!

In order to spend more money in later rounds! Don't you get it? Whether the team spends all of its money on one pick or a more even distribution for all of its picks is irrelevant. If at the end of the day they still spend the same amount of money as they did last year, then there is no way they are being cheap because they aren't saving any money! You can't claim that the team is being cheap on the whole if they are not spending any less money on the whole.

If you want to criticize the strategy from a risk-reward standpoint, fine, but this whole cheapness critique is totally stupid. The Pirates are going to spend just as much money on the draft as they did last year, especially given how much money they will have to offer picks like von Rosenberg, Cain, Den Dekker, Stevenson, Inman, Urban, Cooper and Heller.

So do you defend the Moskos and Bullington pick? Because someone could make the same argument for those picks as well.

No, you idiot. Those picks were made by a totally inept GM by the name of Dave Littlefield. Last I checked, he was long gone. What Littlefield did has no bearing on what Huntington has done. Stop thinking that they are the same person.

Not only did Littlefield suck at drafting in the first round, but he also sucked at drafting later-round talent. And cheapness was not his concern; winning now and saving his job were his only concerns. His ineptitude prevented him from doing either.

Prove that Neil isn't bad at drafting in the later rounds!
My point is Neil in the 2009 draft looked like Littlefield in his drafts. Now in 6 years we can look back and see who was right. And maybe we will get lucky with Sanchez but we could have got lucky with Bullington.

Wilton, et al:

There is an old hillbilly saying that may fit this whole argument...."Never wrestle with a pig, you will both end up covered in pig sh!t, but the pig likes it."
