After tonight's game, this is what management needs to do...

1. Call up Virgil Vasquez
2. Send Snell down to AAA (assuming he has options left)
3. Spot start Karstens on Friday
4. Give Vasquez an opportunity to throw an inning from the bullpen to get his feet wet again
5. Give him the start on Sunday against Greinke

Thoughts?

Snell isn't pitching like a top of the rotation guy, but I don't think his performance is so bad that he needs to get sent down to AAA.

1. Looks like Vasquez left his last start after one inning...is he ok?

2. Assuming he's healthy, I don't really see him being much better than Ian, and he'd probably be worse. He's been pretty inconsistent this year in Indy (only 4 quality starts out of nine full starts).

I think Gorzo could do better than Snell right now. And I think that Ian could benefit from a wake-up call. He is not pitching up to his ability. I would swap those two.

Let Karstens make the start if Morton can't go, and leave Vazquez where he belongs.

Vasquez is fine. He was pulled as an insurance policy if Morton's hammy prevents him from starting as scheduled.

I have no doubt that Morton will miss his start and maybe even make a trip to the 15-day DL.

That figures we trade for the guy then he goes to the DL.

Here is what needs to happen. The pirates need to raise the payroll to league average this offseason.

Morton will not be a push over in years to come. He will be our best one day. I don't know if he will ever be a true #1, but he will be a strikeout machine.

I don't know how long you guys will want to hold on to Snell as a starter in our rotation. I think it is time, too often he has had all those soft hits(?) like last night.

Give someone else a chance-- Gorzo or Vasquez or Karsters-- What is it about Snell that convinces anyone that he'll be back in 5 days, 5 weeks or 5 months?

It is still in people minds that he is a good starter, i don't know why. Bob Walk said yesterday right before first pitch that Snell had put together 3 straight good starts coming into the game last night. I guess just because you don't go out and tank it that they consider it a good start now.

Snell is intriguing, because of his potential, but is a major head case...I think the Pirates need to send him to a shrink...

The guy has good stuff, he just cant seem to put it all together...

He is full of himself. I think everybody else in the rotation has been helped by Kerrigan besides Snell, and i think it is because he thinks he is perfect. I would like to hear what Snell has to say about his season so far. The last thing i heard him say was that he was one of the ten best pitchers in the National League.

I'm not trying to make excuses, Snell does that enough for himself...

Snell has 8 quality starts this season in 15 starts...

His 1st start was coming back after the flu...
His 8th start was cut short because of a rain delay...

Three of his quality starts the Pirate offense scored one run...April 12th vs Cincy (2-0), April 29th vs the Brewers (1-0), and June 12th vs the Tigers (3-1)

Its just the nights he's bad he's real real bad...I think thats a reason you cant send him down, but maybe a week in the bullpen would help...But I think a trip to the shrink is what he needs

Snell has what it takes to be a good pitcher, he just can't get it together.

I really think they should try him in the pen. His problem seems to be maintaining focus over an entire start. He may be highly effective in one inning doses.

Sometimes I think the same thing, Burg. But he also has trouble maintaining focus through a whole inning sometimes. I think if he went to the bullpen, though, he could maybe ramp up the fastball to 96 and use the nasty slider, he could be a decent set up man.

I agree. I don't think it's ego either. I think he suffers from an extreme case of low self esteem.
