West Virginia's D'Arnaud (291 average, 14 doubles, 17 steals and 31 RBIs) will report to Lynchburg Thursday after playing in the lower-Class A South Atlantic League's all-star game.

From a look at the numbers, D'Arnaud showed some very good plate discipline in WV: 30 walks against 31 strikeouts, which translated to a .397 OBP. He also appears to be a pretty efficient base stealer: 16 SB against 3 CS. Not much of a power hitter though. Hopefully he continues to develop.

What is the word on his defense? If he is a plus base runner and can maintain a high OBP, and if his defense is good or above average, he can play the position.

Guys at Bucs Dugout think that one of them will be shifted to 3B, due to the absence of Alvarez. That's a shame, largely because the only way I can see either player improving his defense at SS is to play SS constantly. It's a good problem to have, but it's a problem nonetheless.

As a follow up though, when both Mercer and D'Arnoud were drafted, it was with the stated caveat that they could/would move to either 2nd or 3rd. They were drafted because of their athleticism that could translate to other positions.

They also have a couple other 3b prospects as well. Your guy Wilton, and Matt Hague who is at 1b this year for reps, but is reportedly able to go back to 3b if, for example, Alverez ends up at 1b.
