Monroe is gone. Pearce recalled. Is Pearce going to play or sit on the bench? We already have Moss and Young battling for playing time in RF. Could a LaRoche deal be pending?

Monroe didn't play as well as i thought he would, but he was only given 78 at bats. That also will lower our amount of team homeruns. I know he wasn't doing much but in only 78 at bats he was tied for 3rd on the team in homeruns. We now have 29 team homeruns, an MLB low.

Makes perfect sense to me. I hated bringing north in the first place.

Oh, I have no problem with it. Monroe certainly isn't going to help this team win any more games. I just don't like the idea of Pearce sitting on the bench...especially now while he is getting hot.

Could this be the first move in the process? Perhaps 1B will be vacant soon?

And at 26, shouldn't we be less worried about ABs in the minors? It's time for him to move up or move out. I suspect that it will eventually be the latter btw.

Yea, this is definitely nothing to get excited about. Pearce had that one unbelievable year in the minors, then struggled the next, and is hitting pretty well again this year. He reminds me of an Adam Hyzdu type. Hits in the minors but can't sustain it in the majors. In Pearce's case he doesn't seem to have the plate discipline to be very successful. Having said that, this is the type of year to find out once and for all about guys like this. It's sort of how I feel about Moss. In my gut I don't think he will cut it either but you have to run him out there and find out.

My guess is this is a precursor of another move. I can't see bringing in Pearce to fill the same role as Monroe. I don't think there is any doubt that LaRoche and Grabow will be traded. Jack is almost as certain, but management may have to wait until the season is completely lost before moving him.

Why am I getting a vision of a Neal Hunnington cut-out down in the locker room and his suit is being taken off piece-by-piece with every win?

Considering the current offensive output of Moss and Monroe...I could easily see Pearce getting at least 4 starts a week. Mainly...a RF platoon between Pearce and Moss for RHP/LHP...figure a couple of starts a week there. Then a game a week where Moss and Pearce both play while Morgan sits...and 1 game a week where Pearce plays 1st.

Once Adam gets traded...the problem with positions for Pearce goes away.

I am agreeing with the portent to move. Why? Because it is such a thin market this year (supposedly) as everyone except NY tries to build through the draft. In that scenario, NH may have developed a strategy to get out ahead of the pack for what he wants. This FO has certainly shown a propensity to develop alternative strategies to get what they want. For example, I am absolutely convinced that the Nady trade last year was made as much to create a market for Bay as to acquire talent.

NH and crew may be doing something similar this year in early trading.

Why did they pick now to bring up Pearce? They could have done this weeks ago if it were for replacing LaRoche or right field.

No. I think they either have a trade coming very soon for either LaRoche or an outfielder.

Or they have finally decided to sit Morgan and move Moss/ Young to left and play Pearce in RF much of the time. It would make little sense to bring him up to sit on the bench. So, if not that, where do they play him?

BTW- While not being a Morgan guy, I am not a big Pearce guy either. You're right that Tabata is the guy for next year.

The Morgan experiment may be at/near an end. Considering we have 2 starting OF that have OPS of .660 or below...something needed to be done to get some offense in the lineup. Young is a defensive liability wherever he plays. As I mentioned earlier...I expect Pearce to play fairly regularly (4-5 starts a week, or more) until he shows he isn't capable. And I expect that trial period to be more than a week or two, probably till at least the ASB, and more likely until the trade deadline.

Expecting Tabata to be in the Pirates starting OF at the beginning of 2010 is probably unrealistic. 2011, maybe.

Question: now that Monroe is gone, who replaces him on the 40-man? I believe Pearce was already on the 40-man roster.

My guess is that they'll leave the spot open for players to come in the pending trades.

Strange timing, indeed. I just saw Monroe taking BP with the team, last night (Friday). Usually a team will wait until the beginning or end of a road trip to dump a guy. So it's a little shocking to me that the Monroe/Pearce swap took place today.

Pearce, I assume? I expected to see him start but I thought it would be in right. I wonder if they think he can play left field at PNC Park. If so, that might explain the timing with Morgan struggling. Anyone know anything about Pearce's outfield defense?

It's you isn't it. Substitute2 is the new left fielder.
