Okay, one more Opening day lineup question.

Going back 55 years, beginning with the 1954 season, who started the most opening days for the Pirates at each position. Let's include pitchers in this one. Bonus points if you can tell me how many Opening Day starts they made.

This should be a fairly easy one to take a guess at! I actually guessed myself before I looked it up, and got 7 out of 9 correct. One position actually has a tie. Name one or name both!

Not really Colin...just think about who played the most games at each position for the Bucs and it should not really be that hard.

I will give you some hints.

One guy had the most starts on opening day for the Bucs at TWO DIFFERENT POSITIONS.

Two other guys are Hall of Famers.

One guys career spanned the 50's and most of the 60's.

One guy is still active.

One guy, I believe, is coaching right now.

One guy went on to later manage the Bucs.

And the last guy was recently disucced at length here on the board regarding his off season profession, and some crazy commercials he made.

Ok. Given these hints, I'll take a crack:

Left - Stargell
Center - Virdon
Right - Clemente
3rd -Hebner
SS - Maz
2nd - Cash?
1st. Stargell
Catcher - Kendall

Doh! Right after I posted this I realized, "Maz didn't play short you, idiot". So my revised guess is:

Left - Stargell
Center - Virdon
Right - Clemente
3rd -Hebner
SS - Wilson
2nd - Maz
1st. Stargell
Catcher - Kendall

At least my stupidity proves I didn't cheat and look it up!

Pretty Dang goo!
LF Stargell (11 opening day starts--followed by Skinner with 6)
CF Virdon (8) Followed by Van Slyke (7)
RF Clemente (16) Parker (9)
3b Hebner (8) Madlock (6) --and can you believe nobody else started more than 4?
SS Actually, wilson has 8... but two other guys ALSO have 8. Who are they?
2B Maz (13) Stennett (8)
1b Stargell again (6), and actually tied with Kevin Young and Don Clendennon.
C Kendall (9) LaValliere (6)

Now, what about the Pitcher??

Your clues were very generous, Animal. I would never have guessed Stargell at two positions and would not have guessed Virdon or Hebner without the hints. But you also threw me off a little since there are actually 3 not 2 Hall of Famers on the list. I don't have a clue on the pitcher but I'll take a wild guess: Steve Blass?

I'm guessing that at SS probably looking at Groat and Alley.
Pitcher...Vern Law, maybe??

Now that I've looked...I'm shocked that Law never had an opening day start...and Alley only had 5. I will say that the correct answer at Pitcher would have been my second guess.

GROAT Yes
ALLEY No

And we still need the pitcher!

Actually, I knew what I was posting. "One guy had the most starts on opening day for the Bucs at TWO DIFFERENT POSITIONS." That would obviously be Stargell...then I said "Two OTHER guys are Hall of Famers"...which is you read between the lines indicates the guy playing two positions was too!

and Steve Blass was NOT the pitcher. Think of which "clue" we did not use yet and you can get the pitchers time frame!

HALF RIGHT...as you have probably already seen, Clendennon, Alley, Bonds, Moreno, and Law are incorrect.

Yes, it is Bob Friend, who made 7 opening day starts from 1954 through 1962, followed by Bob Veale who started four straight opening days 64-67, then Dock Ellis with 3.

Okay, we still need the shortstop who had 8 opening day starts, matching Dick Groat and Jack Wilson. I did not think this one would be too difficult??

Does anybody wanna guess who the other SS is?? Does anybody want the answer?? I could give you a couple hints that might help ring a bell.
