Perhaps in the short term, but not the long term. The pitching staff needs horses, and Duke and Maholm will not be around for much longer.

Im sure you are wrong not only would it be a suprising move for Duke or Maholm to be dealt, the return would not be great. The Pirates will likely hold onto them until they get better. It would be a bad move to move them because they are young guys and could be in the future of the organization.

I'm not thinking of them being traded. I'm thinking of them leaving in free agency.

It's pittiful if the Pirates can't muster the funds to resign them...Wait when are they eligible?

After the 2011 season. They will be pushing 30 by that time.

In my mind, it's not a question of whether the Pirates can resign them; it's a question of whether the team would want to sign them.

I think you have to make a distinction with lefties Wilton, especially better than average to good ones.

They usually don't develop until now, at 27 or so, and can be at or near prime past 30. They certainly carry value past 30 as well (whether deserved or not, they are "lefties"). That should influence the thinking regarding signability with those two (assuming we are seeing the real Duke and Malholm), as opposed to the usual RH pitcher.

Very true. Randy Johnson is the perfect example. He had a losing record as a twenty-nine year-old and didn't begin to dominate until he turned 30. Which is why he didn't reach 300 wins until this year. His career from an effectiveness standpoint didnt take off until his thirties.
