DK posts a link to Nutting-lover Charlie Wilmot's analysis of the defensive improvements in the Pirates outfield. Lots of Nutting-biased stats are included. Here is the money quote from my perspective:

So by replacing McLouth with Andrew McCutchen, who's blindingly fast (range is a very important part of outfield defense) and was universally regarded as a very talented defender as he came through the minors, the Pirates' outfield defense is likely to get even better. In fact, it isn't much of a stretch to hope they might have the best outfield defense in baseball for the next few years. This isn't just something to argue about over a beer; it's something that legitimately helps the Pirates win games.

During Nady and McClouth's great half season last year, lots of people were fond of calling the trio of Bay/McLouth/Nady, "The Most Productive Outfield in Baseball". While this may have been true offensively, according to the stats, they were literally "balls to the walls" in most defensive categories. So this year, we have upgrades defensively at all three positions and the guys in the minors who are pegged to take over in the corners sound even better. We'll have to see how the numbers play out over time but I think Wilmot may be right. Could be that we'll be cheering for the Most Protective Outfield in Baseball for quite a few years to come. Should be fun to watch.
