Mark Shapiro is quoted in today's PPG regarding the McLouth trade. He states that such deals are the way that the Pirates are going to be able to be competitive, and also that he likes Charlie Morton. The Indians were interested in Morton and looked at possibly acquiring him.

"In general, what I would suggest to people is to look at the trade as a whole," Shapiro said. "And be patient. I understand what the environment must be like in Pittsburgh, but it takes time."

Yes indeed, and a very good article.

Well, I waited 20 years for the Pens to win their first Stanley Cup.
I have at least been alive to see the Pirates win three World Series!

I can wait! I can wait! Let's Go Bucs! :)

The comparison to the Bartolo Colon trade is interesting. I'm not sure the Pirates got anything near the haul that Shapiro got from Montreal for Colon, but it's interesting to see the reaction the Cleveland fan base had toward it.

C'mon, the reference to the Colon trade has nothing to do with comparing the returns. It has everything to do with demonstrating fan backlash in the face of a the right trade.

It should be pointed out though, that Shapiro and the Indians have alienated a portion of their fan base with these type trades, and have lost attendance over them. This is not a critique of whether they were good or bad trades, but rather an outgrowth of what DK referred to as the "message sent to the team (and fans)" by the trades.

The system in place requires this type of trading to maintain or build competative teams, but the realization is that it will take a toll on your casual fan base who does not immerse itself in the everyday operations of the team, but does invest emotion in certain favorite players.

The constant emotional roller coaster ride that comes from watching a guy develop, perform well and then get moved (necessarily) at a point near peak ... takes a hard toll on a portion of the fan base.
