What former pirate Player was traded TO the Pirates for a player who later went on to become a major league manager, then later was traded FROM the Pirates for another player who went on to become a major league manager?

I have some hints to give if nobody can come up with it.

Phil Garner COULD BE one of the future managers...now don't cheat and google it!

Art Howe?

No, wait, he began his career with the Pirates. Must be someone else.

Chuck Tanner?

NOPE!

NOPE! But good guesses with the PITTSBURGH connection. This kid was born in Aliquippa...even went to Pitt. Won 124 games in the major leagues.

Ah, Animal, you're too generous with the hints. The Pitt connection gives it away. Has to be Doc Medich.

The correct answer is none other than George "Doc" Medich.

YEP...in 1975 Medich, who was thought to be a savior, was traded to the Bucs for Dock Ellis, Ken Brett and Willie Randolph. In the three years prior to that he was 49-40, winning 19 in 1974, with ERAs of 2.95, 3.60, and 3.50. He did not fare so well for the hometown Bucs, going 8-11, with a respectable ERA of 3.52. He did have one huge SAVE that year, going into the stands in a game at Philly to revive a guy having a heart attack, using CPR.

Then, that offseason, he was traded by the Bucs to the Oakland A's, along with Doug Bair, Mitchell Page, Tony Armas, Dave Guisti, and Rick Langford, for Phil Garner, Tommy Helms, and Chris Batton.

Interstingly, that year with the hometown Pirates was Medich's only losing season, except for his last one, when he went 12-15 at the age of 33.

He saved another life in 1978 of a fan having a heart attack during a game.

Unfortunately, after his career was done, so was his medical career when he was suspended for having controlled substances in his possession in the names of patients.
