......a first round draft pick, high impact positional player made it through the Pirate system to start with the Bucs?

I can't remember actually.

This should be and is, according to me, a very exciting moment for the Pirates. Hopefully we can look back to this day not too long from now and really say this was the beginning of the new winning era of Pirate baseball! :)

Jason Kendall comes to mind. He contributed immediately and often early in his career. If memory serves me correctly, he made the jump from AA in 1995 to Opening Day starter in 1996.

Kris Benson, before he became Krissy. Was considered an impact pitcher coming out of college and Prince Kevin made a big deal of giving him a big bonus to show the Bucs spend money.

He came up fast, and was effective before his elbow gave out...

Then he became Krissy..

Well, Chad Hermansen made it and started for the last half of a season and was the Opening Day starter the following year.

Several, really, but not many have been REALLY successful.

Paul Maholm was a #1 pick and made it through our system and has had some success.

Sean Burnett, Chad Hermanson made it through our system and came up to start for a while, but we know what happened there

Jermaine Allensworth came up through the system and became a starter.

Jeff King had some success.

Jason Kendall..

And a kid they drafted back in '85, a college kid out of Arizona, was in the majors in less than a year, and had a little success..a kid by the name of Bonds, Barry Bonds.

The worst really, if it is not Bryan Billington, may have been back in '87 when the Bucs drafted Mark Merchent #2, right behind Griffey Jr. The Bucs actually were going to take him even if Griffey was available. He never made it to the majors.

thanks everyone for the input.......but I was talking about players who were not pitchers......

maybe Aram? Kendall? or possibly we would have to go back to the '70's?

Dave Parker?

Aram was probably the last real offensive threat the Pirates had come through the system.....was he a first round draft pick?

oops...........yes indeed, I guess it would have to be Bonds

Ramirez I believe was signed as a free agent.

Before Kendall, I think you would have to go back to Barry Bonds for a first round position player who made it big.

Nooooooo.. Aram was a Pirate product. I saw him play A ball in Erie when he was, I think, still 17. He hit a ball so far, it plunked off the "Niagra".

Aram was signed as an amateur free agent in 1994 by the Pirates

After I wrote that, I said, "you know, dan is going to post that he as a rookie UFA".

But, c'mon that is REALLY splitting hairs. You can't draft anyone from the Latin America. They are all UFA's.

Aram was a Pirates product from day 1, and came up through the system.

Not trying to split hairs or anything...

It just sucks that theres an argument over who was the last 1st round pick to make an impact on your team...

No splitting of hairs here. The post was about draft choices, not Pirates products.

As I said earlier, we had a few.

Not counting pitchers...Hermanson was drafted in '95..a top 10 pick I believe, out of High School. Made his debut in '99 at the age of 21, and was starting at end of 2001 at age of 23.

Allensworth was a #1 in '93, made it through the system and was in majors starging just three years later.

Kendall was drafted out of HS in '92, and was starting opening day in '96.

Willie Greene was #1 in 1989, was an important part of the Zane Smith trade I believe, and was playing in majors for the Reds at the age of 20, but never really established himself.

Aside of Barry Bonds, Jeff King was probably the best #1 draft pick. (and he was #1 over all). Drafted out of college in '86, King progressed through the minors and made his major league debut in '89. He bounced back and forth between majors and minors a few times. He went on to show consistent improvement throughtout his career and posted a 30 HR and 111 RBI season in '96 before being traded, along with Jay Bell to the Royals (in a salary dump) for three prospects, one of which was Joe Randa. (I guess technically Randa was more than a prospect)
