Okay, this is one for the old guys. No Googling the answer!

On September 1, 1971, the Pittsburgh Pirates made "history". What happened that day in Pirate history?

I know in 1971 the Pirates became the first team in baseball to field an all black starting lineup. I don't know the exact date, but I'll gues it was September 1st.

GOOD GUESS... You are exactly right...first all-black lineup in major league history.

Now, do you (or anybody else) want to take a shot at the starting lineup that day??

I couldn't get all 9 without looking, but I'd guess the following:

Roberto Clemente
Al Oliver
Dave Cash
Manny Sanguillen
Willie Stargell
Dock Ellis
Rennie Stennent (?)
Richie Hebner (he was black, right?)

Another good guess...right down to Stennett. You left out the CF (Oliver was at 1b) and the SS.

Richie Hebner's off-season job was digging graves - hence the nickname. I think he was also an amateur hockey player if my memory doesn't fail me.

Wow that is something. I never would have guessed that. I wonder who the last team to start an all black lineup was. I can't remember one for along time?

A result of clean living and plenty of Town Talk bread, no doubt.

I believe that Larry Demery was the pitcher, Sanguillen behind the plate, Oliver at first, Cash at second, Pagan at third, Hernandez at short, Stargell in left, Clines in center, and Clemente in right.

You must abve missed the answer.....pretty close, but.....
Larry Demery did not make his Pirates debut until 1974. The starter was Dock Ellis. Dave Cash started at third, and Stennett at 2b.

I talked with Gene Clines last season when I was in the Southern League. Jacksonville (the then Double-A affiliate of the LA Dodgers) was in town and Clines was a minor league fielding coordinator for the Dodgers. He and I talked for about a half-hour about that day...

Every player knew the importance of that day when they saw the lineup. He was talking about how the clubhouse had a "historical, Jackie Robinson importance" type feel to it that day. It was really cool to hear him talk about that day..wish I would have taped the whole conversation...
